For reference, the visual speed at which a bird strike occurs.

There is no doubt that the data recorders would have been recovered from this aircraft intact if it had gone down in a thousand feet of water. They can withstand pretty high impacts and the water is not a factor. You are right, though, the data will be useful, for sure.

Surely you jest. Single bird strikes have downed many small aircraft—props and jets. Usually takes a flock to disable the engines on an airliner.

birds injested into a jet engine to a terrible whack of damage in a hurry. doesn’t take much to make a mess of the whole works.

I apologize for not providing context. I have flown US Airways and I stand by my statement.

However, I do commend the flight crew for their actions.

Oh, no doubt of that - but the recorders don’t always tell the entire story. An intact airframe and live pilots and passengers to interview will provide a wealth of data.

That’s a cool site. Can you change airports?

Yes you can. Take out lga (La Guardia)and substitute the airport code. For example, Newark is EWR.

That’s a strange video! Bitchin Betty is a mans voice..... Bitchin betty was invented to cut through the noise and chatter, therefore they used a woman’s voice. I remember when certain Arab counties that bought F-16’s complained that Bitchin Betty was a woman, they didn’t like being told what to do by women.....

I was the attending flight surgeon on that crash. The description is accurate except in two respects: The pilot in the jump seat was a student and it was the aircraft commander not the copilot who also perished, but not because his seat malfunctioned. The gang ejection function on the B-1B went in a specific order: #1 was the rightseat pilot, then the Defensive Systems Officer, then the Offensive systems officer, finally the leftseat pilot (AC). The aircraft impacted the ground before his ACESII seat had time to activate.

Neither of the jumpseat occupants had a prayer and after that crash, low level missions were restricted to 4 crew only.

For further reference, a less successful water landing by a 707.

You are right about that, plus anyone in the water, at that temperature, for over a few minutely will be incapacitated. I was thinking Air Florida flight 90, which crashed into the Potomac on takeoff at Washington, DC on January 13, 1982, when I first saw the report. Someone had an angel on their shoulder.

The aircraft impacted the ground before his ACESII seat had time to activate.

ACESII was/is a good seat, I wondered about that when I read the link. Thanks for setting the record straight.
