The ducks were found in an area of open water and on the ice of the Fond du Lac River near Lake Winnebago, said George Protogere, a DNR warden supervisor.
The snowmobiler apparently skipped over the open water, turned around and skipped over the water again, Protogere said.
The fact that the snowmobiler appears to have intentionally run over the ducks is disturbing, Protogere said.
"You think about wildlife and the journey that they have when they migrate and the ones that stick around with these harsh temperatures, and then all of the sudden they get killed by a senseless act," he said. "It just does not make any sense."
The ducks - 37 drake mallards and 20 mallard hens - were killed sometime between about 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. Tuesday, Protogere said.
The duck slaughter comes less than a week after snowmobilers ran down and killed four deer and fatally injured a fifth Friday night in Waupaca County. No arrests have been made in connection with that case, authorities said.

Obviously, compassion is not a trait shared by all humans.
It’s pretty common to see large flocks of ducks sleeping around the edge of a patch of open water. They will be sitting there with their heads tucked under their wings. If the jerk came up on them quickly enough, he could hit a lot of birds before they could react.
The ducks that stay in Wisconsin tend to be those that are already acclimated to human activity. We have a pond nearby where 25 -30 ducks surround a little spring. They will come up to you if they think you have some food for them. They are essentially tame animals.
The snowmobiler needs some serious punishment.

That’s a tough statement to argue with. But, just out of curiosity, it’d be interesting to know your definition of compassion.
“I just don’t believe in killing indiscriminately.”
Most well rounded people don’t. But that’s the problem. Our society generates some pretty oblong individuals. I like to urge people to beware of compassion driven tunnel vision. Some people focus on “the children”, others on puppies, but the social problem really encompasses all the symptoms. I wish people would focus on the greater problem with the anger and intensity that they reserve for the symptoms of their choice. All victims would be better off.
