The selection of Robinson for the opening party on Sunday came after weeks of criticism over Mr Obama's choice of conservative pastor Rick Warren to deliver the religious invocation on Tuesday, January 20, the day Mr Obama is sworn in to office.
Robinson, who is the first openly gay bishop in the Anglican Communion, will pray at the star-studded event to be broadcast on national television from the Lincoln Memorial on January 18, the inaugural committee said in a statement.
"Our intention is to root the event in history, celebrating the moments when our nation has united to face great challenges and prevail," said executive producer George Stevens, Jr.
"We will combine historical readings by prominent actors with music from an array of the greatest stars of today."
Robinson, who announced his inclusion in the event in an email to friends that was printed in part by US media, said he believed his role was an important one.
"It's important for any minority to see themselves represented in some way," Robinson said in an interview with the Concord Monitor, a newspaper in the state of New Hampshire where he worships.

I wonder if they invited Larry Sinclair?
I’m sure there is no gay gene, but a gay bishop gene?
Isn’t this the Bishop that 0 sought out and had several meetings with, seeking advise on what it’s like to be the first?
If there are bishops cheating on their wives (and there very well may be, I just don't know of any), they are probably keeping it somewhat of a secret. That is between them and God.
This "bishop", however, seems to delight in making a spectacle of his relationship, and tearing apart the Church at the same time. If he truly cared for the Church, he would keep his sexual life to himself.
Sorry. No moral equivalency here.
It's not like reveling in and flaunting one's sin and mocking God is a virtue.
Lovely in Lavender!
So ? He’s gay. Whoop-dee-doo !!
What is it ? You think America will get cooties if someone from the Dangling Wrist Club offers an invocation ?
Are you that insecure about your own sexuality ?
Bishop Gene Robinson is going to offer prayer at the inauguration....he’ll be praying its raining....raining men...
I imagine that Gene Robinson may not be struck down by the proverbial lightening, but certainly this “religion” he is promoting will not last. It is a politically-correct construct, conforming to the beliefs of a small group of people and made only for the immediate age. Robinson may gain some celebrity from his actions, but his “church” will not exist in a few short years.
Some of these pictures remind me of a Monty Python skit.
What was once ridiculous is now reality.
OK - and Rick Warren is the one who’s controversial?
He's a gay man -- he's not "upfront" about anything.
“I’m here! I’m queer! Invite me to the inauguration, dear!”
Well, she is a female presiding in the position of a pastor, so of course she has a defiant look.
There’s no ring on her finger either, I can’t imagine why... /s
It’s not the fact that he’s gay. No one would care if this were Ellen Degenerous. It’s the fact he presents himself to be a man of God while living a homosexual lifestyle. I guess it’s sort of like John Edwards giving marital advice. Some things just don’t go together.
“Queerly beloved we are gathered here to randomly unite 1000 of you homos in matrimony. We have 500 portable public toilets for honeymoon suites.”
“Episcopal Gothic?”
