President George W. Bush will give a farewell address to the nation Thursday night, billed by the administration as a chance to reflect on his tenure and welcome Barack Obama without fighting old battles one last time.

Bush will deliver the speech, expected to run 10 to 15 minutes, from the ornate East Room of the White House. He will have a small audience of people in the room, chosen for their stories of personal courage.

White House press secretary Dana Perino said Monday that Bush will "uphold the tradition of presidents using farewell addresses to look forward — ....

*snip*

Perino said the speech will be the last scheduled public event for Bush as president until he appears on the North Portico to greet Obama on Inauguration Day, which is Jan. 20.

Is "pound sand " vulgar? I didn't realize it was.

Well, if it is then I apologize and the mod can delete my post.

I didn’t SAY that it was vulgar, I asked you what your view of the phrase was, nothing more and nothing less.

You’re up early, but of course: so many miscreants to discipline, and so little time, eh?

Heh.

I can't believe it took me so long to realize what a terrible RINO President he’s been. I think I had cognitive dissonance or something

That happens when a carnival barker is really good at what he does, knows how to work up the crowd, but what is delivered inside the tent once the tickets have been bought falls way short of the pumped up expectations.

Now we get to move on to the REAL freak show come the 20th.

I don’t think you’re stupid. I think you’re wrong about the country being center/left. We’ve been voting as far right (candidate we hate the least) as possible, and the conservative base is sick of it. We’re LOSING precisely because republicans are trying to appeal to the moderates. Rush is right, conservatism works every time it’s tried. Sarah was a conservative, and she woke the base up, but the base was too discusted with McLame’s bailout BS, plus they knew he wasn’t really a conservative. Sarah Palin, Bobby Jendall, Duncan hunter...there are electable conservatives out there, but there’s no leadership in the repub party. The only thing wrong with Reagan conservatism is: NOBODY”S USING IT! (stole that from rush too).

Very well said! President Bush has been an outstandingly good president for 8 years. I am very grateful for all he has done for the country. His nay sayers can just stand and wait for President Perfect and they will be surprised when he never appears. Even Reagan, as good as he was, made mistakes and was not perfect.

“Sadly, that’s about it. If the Dems had been in control of the Congress during his term at least we could give him that. Instead he had a Republican Congress for six of his eight years.”

Exactly. That takes away any real excuse he had for some of the wild spending of his era. Sure didn’t see too many vetos of big spending increases in the six years R’s controlled both and sure saw a lot of him pushing big non-defense related spending packages.

Rush is wrong about this, because the country is changing. We have lost a generation of potential conservatives because of the media propaganda of the last 8 years. It may be that there will be a rebound to the center right with an Obama disaster, but right now it is center left.

There is no doubt that Sarah Palin energized the base and was probably the only reason McCain didn't lose by a larger margin. However, should she make a run in 2012 she will have to overcome the false image of her the media has created (with the help of some snobbish conservatives who can't stand a candidate who didn't go to an Ivy League school).

I am not relying on my feelings or intuition. The Republican party lost registrants over the last two years. Enlistments in the military are down. Much of the public wants more regulation of the market and corporations, and wants the government to "do something" about the economy. These are not center right positions.

What I would suggest is that many conservatives in the public arena learn how to present their message without the angry rhetoric which seems to have become prevalent. For example, how do you think a slightly conservative person would loook at the exchanges we have had on this thread? Do you think that the exchanges on display here would make such a person eager to join our ranks? I don't think so.

Another example is Ann Coulter. I saw her the other night in an exchange with Janine Turner (also a conservative) about unwed mothers. Janine was trying to make the point that Ann's attack on unwed mothers is too hard on the women and gives men a free pass. Ann just kept quoting all of her statistics in a very fast and loud voice. She came across as harsh and judgemental. Ann Coulter can be very funny, but she has a tin ear for how things sound to those who are not conservative...and I don't mean liberals. People who are just getting interested in politics are turned off by her style, and that is not a good thing for us. Did it ever occur to anyone that that is why Bill Maher had her as a guest so much?

Conservatism works ONLY if it is presented in a cheerful, friendly manner in which the benefits can be shown to the audience. When you present it as a "my way or the highway," angry series of proposals which look like punishments rather than improvements, voters will look for another alternative. In an insecure age, it's hard to sell freedom to people who are worried about their next paycheck.

We simply have to be smarter about this than we have been.

I am sorry if there are thin skinned people who cannot accept that this phenomenon is in fact even possible, but it is.

No problem accepting its possible.(although amongst Republicans Bush is in the 75 % approval range.) Did you ever think you might be wrong?

yes, there was one time on this topic where I was wrong. I thought I might been wrong, but as it turned out, I was actually correct in my thinking. Thanks.
