Northwest Indiana Times Police: Man shoots, kills suspect in Hammond robbery attempt
By Times Staff | Monday, January 12, 2009 HAMMOND | An attempted robbery early Sunday morning turned fatal for one of the suspects, police said.
A 38-year-old man and his girlfriend were exiting their sport-utility vehicle in the parking lot of McTavern's bar in the 7400 block of Indianapolis Boulevard when two people attempted to rob the couple, according to a Hammond police news release.
Another person is believed to have been an accomplice in the attempted robbery, Police Chief Brian Miller said.
The owner of the vehicle took a handgun from the SUV and shot one of the suspects in the chest, the release states. The shooting victim died at the scene before Hammond Fire Department personnel could provide further treatment and he could get to a hospital.
Kenneth Denson, 17, of the 600 block of East 131st Street in Chicago, was pronounced dead from a gunshot wound to the chest about 1:30 a.m., a Lake County coroner's office spokeswoman said Sunday.
The second robbery suspect and an accomplice fled from the scene in a vehicle and traveled north on Indianapolis Boulevard into East Chicago, where they crashed and police apprehended them. Miller said an illegal narcotic drug was found in the vehicle.
Police said the investigation continues. The man who shot Denson has cooperated with police and has turned over his handgun.
Charges could be filed today against the other two suspects in custody, Miller said.
In September, a 40-year-old Gary man, Eric Lowe, was shot and killed outside of McTavern's following a dispute. Lowe was a security worker for the bar.
Good thing the SUV was disarmed or there could have been wholesale bloodshed.
WHAT!
I hope they replaced them with a few more firearms, since he's not afraid to use them and obviously uses them well.
“The southern half of Lake County, Indiana, is rural, sparsely populated and fairly conservative. The northern half is urban, densely populated, and as corrupt as can possibly be.”
Yes. Can you spell GARY INDIANA!
Those vote fraudsters put B.O. over the top to wipe out the conservative votes in Lake County, IN.
I hope it all works out well for the actual victim, here.
In MN, if no other weapon were to be found, this guy would be locked up for not running away while trying to dial 911....
I don’t get up on that end of Indianapolis Blvd. very often, but I know where it is. I’ve been to the Carson’s there a couple of times.
Is it me or does it appear that people protecting their lives and property with firearms tend to be pretty good shots?
I’m retired military so handling firearms is not new to me. However, it’s been years since I handled and/or fired a weapon. Just bought my own gun and am relearning gun handling and marksmanship. I will not keep the gun loaded unless I’m comfortable I won’t hurt myself or anyone else.
What I’m trying to say is that the vast majority of gun owners appear to be responsible people.
Ping!
How is Porter County?
I am currently looking at moving there. Can’t wait to get out of Illinois!
As close to Heaven as it gets.
1st EMT:
"Doggone it Eddy, I let you drive because you said you knew the way to the hospital! Now here we are stuck on another dead end street with no room to turn around. When are you ever going to learn the streets around here?"
2nd EMT:
"Hey man, you told me to turn left back there and I did, so it aint my fault if this guy croaks before we get him to the ER. Whoa, is that tube you stuck down his nose supposed to be draining blood on the floor like that?"
LOL! It may have been a 40 caliber A-100 with a high capacity 147 Leslie magazine.
That seems reasonable. It also seems reasonable that they issue a loaner.
In Texas that is correct. I do not know what the law is in Indiana.
Celebrate the fact that you are still alive because of your weapon. Celebrate by by buying a new one or as is the case of many, go to your gun cabinet and take out one and carry it until your other weapon is returned.
For gods sake keep a loaded clip in the weapon. If you are not comfortable with one in the tube do not keep one in the barrel. I would suggest a 1911. With its grip safety it will not go bang unless you really want it to. It can be carried safely with one in barrel.
