Northwest Indiana Times Police: Man shoots, kills suspect in Hammond robbery attempt
By Times Staff | Monday, January 12, 2009 HAMMOND | An attempted robbery early Sunday morning turned fatal for one of the suspects, police said.
A 38-year-old man and his girlfriend were exiting their sport-utility vehicle in the parking lot of McTavern's bar in the 7400 block of Indianapolis Boulevard when two people attempted to rob the couple, according to a Hammond police news release.
Another person is believed to have been an accomplice in the attempted robbery, Police Chief Brian Miller said.
The owner of the vehicle took a handgun from the SUV and shot one of the suspects in the chest, the release states. The shooting victim died at the scene before Hammond Fire Department personnel could provide further treatment and he could get to a hospital.
Kenneth Denson, 17, of the 600 block of East 131st Street in Chicago, was pronounced dead from a gunshot wound to the chest about 1:30 a.m., a Lake County coroner's office spokeswoman said Sunday.
The second robbery suspect and an accomplice fled from the scene in a vehicle and traveled north on Indianapolis Boulevard into East Chicago, where they crashed and police apprehended them. Miller said an illegal narcotic drug was found in the vehicle.
Police said the investigation continues. The man who shot Denson has cooperated with police and has turned over his handgun.
Charges could be filed today against the other two suspects in custody, Miller said.
In September, a 40-year-old Gary man, Eric Lowe, was shot and killed outside of McTavern's following a dispute. Lowe was a security worker for the bar.
I have no idea why he surrendered his handgun to the police?
HISTORIC LAW: State Sen. Johnny Nugent, R-Lawrenceburg (left), State Police Superintendent Paul Whitesell and state Rep. Troy A. Woodruff, R-Vincennes, announced the first law to allow lifetime gun permits. - KATE HOLLOWAY / The Star
DETAILS ON GUN PERMITS
Indiana offers two types of handgun permits: hunting/target or personal protection. You are required to have one of those permits to transport a gun.
Permit to carry: You must be at least 18 and never have been convicted of a felony. Other restrictions may apply in certain cases.
Applications: Forms, available at police and sheriff's departments, require your name, age, address, length of residence in the community and an FBI background check. You must submit a set of fingerprints.
Cost: The new lifetime personal protection license, which allows Hoosiers to carry a concealed handgun, costs $125 for residents who do not have a current four-year license and $100 for current licensees. The cost of four-year licenses for new applicants increased from $25 to $40, with the same fee for renewals.

I wish Tennessee offered the “lifetime” option like that. Mine expires in March and it’ll be another $50 for 4 more years.
He probably had no choice. Somebody is dead. It's a material piece of evidence in a homicide case, at least until either a grand jury or prosecutor define it as a justifiable homicide.

Good response. I am sure you are correct.
He was also from Obama’s old community organizing neihborhood.
Lets hope he doesnt have to wait for all that to play out before getting his firearm back.
I grew up in the Woomar area of Hammond where this took place.
I got a friend who lives in Schererville, Indiana, just 20 minutes south of Chicago. He says Lake County is very conservative, Republican and has small town values, yet just a scant drive up North is the corrupt Marxist hellhole of Cook County.

My neighborhood makes the news again ping!
There.
Fixed.
Kudos to the reporter for naming the dead perp, but leaving the shooter unidentified. He deserves to be paid bounty for saving the taxpayers a lifetime of criminal damage and incarceration costs by treating the perp to a dirt nap.
Looks like he got exactly what he deserved to me.
I re-read the story a couple of times and saw no mention of the BG’s having a weapon.
Might there be an issue with the shooter using “unequal force”?
Just askin’....
The southern half of Lake County, Indiana, is rural, sparsely populated and fairly conservative. The northern half is urban, densely populated, and as corrupt as can possibly be.
Hey (former) Neighbor! I used to live near Northcote Ave near Jefferson Park - went to Jefferson School a couple years
It’s divided roughly along US 30. North of US 30 is solid blue Democrat corruption. South of US 30 is rural and Red.
“Man shoots, kills suspect in Hammond robbery attempt (Indiana)”
Was it a B-3? Or just an M-1?
