Sarah Obama, 86, will fly from her native Kenya to attend the inaugural festivities, the Kenyan government announced on Tuesday.
Sarah Hussein Onyango Obama isn't actually related to the next president by blood - she was the third wife of Barack Obama's paternal grandfather. The two must speak through an interpreter as she knows only a few words of English.
But they formed a close bond when he first visited Kenya in 1988.
Sarah Obama will attend a pan-African celebration the night of the inauguration. It's not the first time she's been to Washington: she came in 2004 to celebrate her step-grandson's inauguration into the U.S. Senate.

Yes, she’s the one.
And, I’m sure by now she’s been briefed.
Briefed? Isn’t it obvious by now that they don’t CARE if we know he was born in Kenya?
I hope she says that during Inauguration.. please do it.
When will this ‘black’ president’s white relative come on stage. Certainly there are distant cousins, aunts, uncles aside from Dick Chaney that could come forward dispelling the myth that he will be our first black president.
“Not if she can find 0bamas aunt who is here illegally.”
Are you referring to the one who was on the dole in Boston and then was ‘moved’? (was it for health reasons? I forget)
Probably less costly to fly the relative in from Kenya.
Yarkov Smirnoff: What a country!
Not only that, but remember that between 1958 and 1982, the first, and third wives of Barack Obama Sr. gave birth to six other children and a girlfriend of his gave birth to a seventh child. Of those seven children, six were boys. It would seem to me that a person would need a scorecard to keep up with them all.
Yes after all, Granny Sarah is the mother of Aunt Zeituni, is she not?
I would not be surprised that the Obama will physically be at the inauguration, from what I hear the Secret Service is so concerned they are discussing a televised event with him at a safer secure unknown location and its broadcasted on jumbo screens.
The other concept is to use the body double approach which just may happen.
He doesn’t?
Well it’s possible Frank Marshal Davis is his real father.
Or else he just looks like his uh handsome mother.
This is his real grandmother, not step-grandmother, at least according to the Associated Press:
Obama’s Kenyan Grandmother Attending Inaugural
Tuesday, January 6, 2009 1:30 PM
WASHINGTON — President-elect Barack Obama’s Kenyan grandmother will be among the millions of people in Washington for the Inauguration.
Sarah Obama, the mother of Obama’s Kenyan-born father, will join representatives from the Kenyan government, African Union and African diplomats for an unofficial inaugural ball on Jan. 20. Organizers say Kenya’s foreign minister and the Boys Choir of Kenya also plan to travel to the United States for the invitation-only event at a Washington-area hotel.
Obama was born in Hawaii to a white mother from Kansas and a black father from Kenya. Obama’s father left when he a child and died in 1982. Obama was not especially close to his African family although he visited them on a 2006 trip to Kenya.

Can the AP get anything correct?
Obama’s paternal father also had a lot of wives. Word is that his marriage to Barack’s mother was illegitimate because it was bigamy (he was already married to another woman).
Details in this thread also indicate he visited Kenya in 1988.
Stalinists must have a busy time editing the Obama historical record.
Does the timeline currently include or exclude his trip to Pakistan (and what nation’s passport did he use)?
‘Don’t throw that missionary in the stew pot! He’s a friar!’
I think this is the first time she’s been released from house arrest for almost a year. She will not be allowed to speak with the press, that’s for sure. And they, of course, will bow down and obey. But they’ll maybe use her as a photo-op of some sort.
Or maybe not.
Odinga is supposed to be coming, too? I wonder if they’ll take any pictures of this terrorist church burner?
