Seven New Orleans police officers fired their weapons at a 22-year-old man who was killed early Thursday while sitting in a car outside his grandmother's house, Superintendent Warren Riley said Saturday.
The seven were among nine officers reassigned in the wake of the fatal shooting.
Riley said Adolph Grimes III sparked a "gunbattle" with officers when he fired at an unmarked police vehicle that pulled up next to his car. The officers, who were involved in undercover patrols, were wearing street clothes.
Grimes died in the shooting near North Claiborne Avenue and Gov. Nicholls Street.
Orleans Parish Coroner Frank Minyard said Grimes was struck by 14 bullets, with two hitting him in the front torso. The other 12 wounds were in his lower back and legs, Minyard said Friday.
At a news conference Saturday, Riley disputed that characterization, saying Grimes was hit in the front, on the side under the arm and "near the back." Although he said "numerous" rounds were fired, Riley said he could not give an exact number.

Looks like Grimes thought he was about to become a victim of a drive-by. And he was right.

I think he thought he was about to jacked!!
From the article:
“Assistant Police Superintendent Marlon Defillo said that on Saturday evening, as crime lab investigators began to “process” the car, they found an assault shotgun in the trunk along with a “high velocity” magazine clip for the 9 mm handgun and shotgun shells.”
Assault...high velocity
All nine officers involved have been reassigned to desk duty pending the homicide division’s investigation of whether the shooting was justified, Riley said. He refused to identify the officers, saying it is “inappropriate” unless the department determines they did something wrong.
The nine officers, part of a 1st District narcotics unit working undercover to target armed robbers, included three women and six men. They were dressed like tourists, and the women would pose as “decoys” — potential victims — for robbers, Riley said.
As officers came up beside the car, Grimes fired a shot at them, Riley said. He would not describe the officers’ unmarked vehicle, saying it will be used in future undercover operations.
Key words to scare the ignorant sheep. BS.
Tough neighborhood, both residents and cops are on edge.
How is a magazine for a gun considered high velocity? Heck you can put a subsonic bullet in the same magazine has a supersonic bullet.
Yes but you don’t spook a guy sitting in his car by suddenly converging on him with an unmarked car that even the cops won’t identify what make or model it is. Not to mention that all the cops involved were dressed to do under cover ops.
Weird terms I know...Assault shotgun I would first think spas12..law12 whatever ... BUT I am guessing down there it means any pump with a pistol grip...
“”high velocity” magazine clip”
No idea what that means...guessing journalist tacked on “clip” at the end.
I have had my dealings with NOPD and have seen them go wild on suspects and innocent citizens. NOPD is without question a brutal force.
And yes, it would appear that the incident on N. Claiborne was a very bad shooting.
Will the new DA bring charges?
Exactly! And just what was he doing that warranted their checking him out? Was it because he didn't have a local plate on his car?
hmm anyone interested search that PD name
If an "Assistant Police Superintendent" actually said this, it reveals a lot about the NOPD.
This whole thing stinks to high heaven. There is a death under investigation, and they will not identify the cops involved, nor describe the "undercover car". Let "Joe Citizen" try withholding information in a case that doesn't even involve a death, and see how that works out for him.
So, if it's 3 AM in the 'hood, and a bunch of thugs roll up on you in a pimped-out hooptie mobile (just wait and see)... you should just assume that they are cops and get out and grab the ankles?
The conflicting stories, along with the details that are being withheld lead me to believe that they are trying to buy enough time to cook up a believable story. In the end, it's going to be determined to be good shooting... just watch.
It's a little early for popcorn, so I'm just going to enjoy a nice cup of coffee while I watch the "usual suspects" twist themselves into pretzels trying to convince the rest of us that this was a good shooting by the brave and noble po-leese.
I just hope I’m never stupid enough to roll up next to someone in the wee hours in NO. I’m sure I’ll be in plain clothes and driving an unmarked vehicle. Heaven knows they would be in danger from me. Do I need a sarcasm tag?
” pending the homicide divisions investigation of whether the shooting was justified “
White ? They were justified . Black - unjustified .
You nailed it...I was thinking the same thing.
Funny how everyone is assuming the cops are legit. I watched every season of “The Shield” and based on this, I think we have a rouge unit of police officers running rampant.
Actually, I am from the south side of Chicago and my dad was of Irish decent with plenty of dealings with the Mafia, so seen plenty of corruption.
