Thank you. I have three autistic sons and have been confronted by people like the Kennys because we aren’t chasing down the latest ‘cure’. There are people out there who feel you are engaging in child abuse because you don’t follow the same treatment protocol for your autistic kids that they do for theirs. I am from the ‘if it works for your kid great’ train of thought.
The Kennys sound offended that the Travolta’s weren’t thrilled with their vast knowledge. I don’t like Travolta’s politics or his religion but he’s always seemed to be a nice man and a good Dad. I base this on the opinions of people I know who have met the family.
I never thought it was any of anyone’s business if Jett had autism or not, personally. I will be praying for the Travoltas.
Maybe. Could be he’d been feeling fine recently, and they didn’t presently see a need to monitor a 16-year-old as if he were a newborn. When we went on vacation earlier this year, our teenagers were often up, watching movies and playing games, hanging out on the deck with the telescope, after the adults had gone to bed.
Not knowing any more specifics of the situation, I hesitate to consider it neglectful to not supervise a 16-year-old every time he goes to the bathroom.
Prayers sent for Jett.
“LOS ANGELES, Jan. 2 (UPI) — Jett Travolta, the 16-year-old son of Hollywood film stars John Travolta and Kelly Preston, has died in the Bahamas, Travolta’s lawyer confirmed to TMZ Friday.
The teen, who reportedly had a history of health problems, was vacationing with his parents when he suffered a seizure at the Old Bahama Bay Hotel on Grand Bahama Island. Attempts to revive him were unsuccessful, Travolta’s attorney Michael Ossi told the entertainment news Web site.
Police told TMZ it appears Jett hit his head in a bathtub. An autopsy is being conducted to determine the exact cause of his death....”
Just a guess, but the report says the boy was taken by ambulance to the hospital. I'd guess most people upon discovering their child unconscious would call for medical help rather than calling the police.
My teenage sons go to bed on their own, and I don’t normally check on them. Obviously, I don’t think that’s child neglect.
Do they have special needs and a history of seizures?
Our son has a history of seizuers, as he got older he could feel one coming on and he made sure to tell us when he was feeling it. During those times we made sure to check on him before we went to bed and when we woke up, other than that did not do a regular check up on him (when he was a teenager).
The police report states that the boy was enroute to the hospital at 11:40a and hadn’t arrived at the hospital yet. Maybe it takes a long time to get to the hospital from their hotel.
Hospital is 30-40 minutes from the resort.
Thanks, that’s informative. If someone in a room has been sick, I’ll check on them during the night, and I sometimes drop off laundry after the children have gone to bed, but I don’t regularly go in their rooms after they’re in bed. And if someone’s in the bathroom for an extended period of time, I’ll get up and shoo them out! “You know you have a large family when there’s a line for the bathroom - at midnight!”
I can relate to that one. When I went to live with my dad, as a teenager, there were eight of us and one bathroom.
Very well said.
There's nothing new under the sun; I am very close to someone who has convinced herself that her perfectly adorable, bright, normal boy-boy-boy is ADD and defective. It's laughable on its face, yet it only takes a few who take her seriously to cause ugly problems for everybody.
On the other hand, I knew people who had an autistic daughter so afflicted that watching snow on a television set captured her attention. Poor thing, and I admire and respect those people for caring for her as they did. That's autistic, in my book. I meet some kid who appears to me perfectly normal, and am told in hushed tones by someone an hour later that "He's autistic!" and big red bells and alarms go off about the women surrounding him.
Oh man ... I've been running with scissors! *oops*
Ya think?????
*sigh*
Jackals.
No they don’t, and perhaps if they did, I would check on them.
Dreadful. RIP.
Very sad for someone to die so young.
I HOPE there was good medical treatment, and he was being taken care of for Kowalsaki’s Disease... He also supposedly had seizure(s).
I have seizures and read the other day that Scientology is against medication for seizures. I have heard of Kowalsaki’s disease, but know nothing of it. I must admit I felt bad for the boy, the parents, and the possibility that their religion interfered in any medical treatment for seizures etc. I hope I am wrong with my gut reactions. May the Travolta/Preston family get the support and comfort they need.
Or those who see ADD everywhere. My oldest son had a Sunday School teacher who figured because he was an overly active four year old that he was ADD. I told her that he acted the same as his cousin did (who was ADHD) when said cousin was on his medication. She still tried to make suggestions. It was one big reason I decided to homeschool, because I didn't need a school teacher pulling the same thing.
Now my 8 year old probably is ADD, but we don't have an "official" diagnosis, because there is nothing a professional can do that we already aren't doing to teach him to focus.
