Amazon says 2008 holiday season was 'best ever'

SEATTLE (AP) -- Amazon.com Inc. said Friday that the 2008 holiday season was the online retailer's "best ever," with more than 6.3 million items ordered and 5.6 million units shipped during its peak day on Dec. 15.

Amazon's upbeat take on the holiday season bucked the drumbeat of generally dismal news from retailers. Holiday sales typically account for 30 percent to 50 percent of a retailer's annual total, but rising unemployment, home foreclosures, the stock market decline and other economic worries led many shoppers to slash their shopping budgets this year.

We did over 95% of our Christmas shopping this year on Amazon. We upgraded to a Prime membership and got free 2 day air shipping on everything.

We fought no crowds, no weather, no traffic, no delays, and paid the same prices if not less than if we went out to the local stores. Only one item was delayed, but it was due to FedEx, not Amazon.

You don’t have to worry about getting trampled to death at the local Walmart when you shop the internet from home.

I contributed to that. I did not want to fight the madness that is Christmas season and shopped from home in PJ’s. Most were to teens in the family with gift cards for song downloads.

B-b-b-b-ut, I thought we were in the worst Depression since the 1930's!!!!!!!!

I call "bull$hit" on a "Depression". It may be a slowdown, but it's NOT a "depression". A "depression" would have men in coat and tie and wingtip shoes, standing in a mile long line, waiting for the "privilege" of digging ditches for $1 a day.

hell, I'm trying to get my house ready to sell AND I CAN'T GET ANYBODY TO HELP ME FIX IT UP!!! I'm offering double the normal rate to get the fuse box fixed, and do a little landscaping, and everybody I talk to is "too busy".

If we're in a "Depression" then why aren't there men lined up outside my house ready to do everything in their might to do some work for me?

A few more reasons I see we're not in a "depression"

-I still get rude or inattentive service at all fast-food places except Chik-Fil-A.

-I still have my part-time job at a fitness center...and I'm over 50 lbs. overweight.

It's probably just Depression in Blue States like Michigan and New York, where they voted heavily for Obama and are ruled by Labor Thugs and Socialist politicians.

We upgraded to a Prime membership and got free 2 day air shipping on everything.

Is it really worth the cost to upgrade? I usually just order over $25 and get free shipping and although I don't get 2-day shipping, Amazon is usually pretty good about getting things to me in a timely manner.

Can’t speak for other sectors, but my little online automotive performance store performed 17% better this December compared to December 2007

I’m not surprised. We did just about all our shopping on line this year. I hate the malls. About the only time I stepped foot in our local mall was when our daughters needed some small gifts for their friends and teachers. Bath and Body Works and Claires are great for little gifts like that.

And I hear you about trying to get someone out to do work at your house. We wanted some trees taken down in our backyard and we called just about every tree company in the phone book. They were all too busy or told us they could be out in a couple weeks to give us an estimate. Hubby mentioned his dilema to his barber. Hooked him up with a preacher friend who has a part time gig doing tree work. Out the next day with his crew.

Chick-fil-a is a great business. Not only are their employees polite, they never seem to screw up your order and our local franchise gives back to the community in many ways. Not only that, they are closed on Sunday and it obviously doesn’t affect their profits. Good for them!

Actually, it is to us. Our Prime membership cost $59, and we also used the $3.99 overnight option quite a bit. The only thing it is not good for is ordering items from Amazon Sellers, most of whom are not bound by the free shipping.

We feel we got more than our monies worth. We ordered several large and heavy items (Bicycle for example whose shipping weight was 72 pounds.)

I got 2 day shipping (ordered Saturday night, came Tuesday) and they guaranteed it wouldn’t arrive before Monday (the 29th). I didn’t pay any extra for my order.

I work for an online retailer, our business was brisk too. We kept wondering when the “recession” was going to hit. /sarc
