Bush: Automakers will get $13.4B from TARP plus an additional $4B later if they become 'viable.' More soon

==> “Actually this is a lot better then just the bailout plan. the UAW has to give up a lot more.” <==
Actually, the UAW gave up nothing but promises, in exchange for BILLIONS of taxpayer dollars. I am retired on a pension of under $25k, Social Security, and investment income that has just taken a major hit. I pay income tax on all but 15% of the SS, and I DETEST the idea of my taxes going to UAW pensions and health care that exceed mine by thousands of dollars annually.
I’m sure in 3 months President Bush... will do nothing because he will be ex-President Bush and Zero will give them whatever they want.
Nice picture - in turquoise, it was my first car, as a high school senior.
Sorry, I'm not a protectionist. If an American product is the best and the best value for money, I'm happy to buy it. If an American product can't compete - especially because of bloated union wages - I'll buy foreign. I'm not willing to impoverish myself just to "buy American" and I'm sure as heck not going to support unions that are hostile to liberty and conservative values.
The only way our industries will be healthy in the long run is to be competitive. Our wages can be significantly higher only if our workers are significantly more productive.
yeah, but “who would ever a fly a bankrupt airline”?!!(sarc)
at least ONE guy gets it:
December 18, 2008
ONLY YOU CAN DO IT!
WE CAN FREEZE THE 2ND $350 BILLION BAILOUT MONEY!
People may be sick and tired of my recent frustration, but Im committed to a solution, and that effort begins at noon today, December 18, 2008.
MY GOAL: to return to every taxpaying American family half of the $5,000 that was wrongfully taken from them in the $700B bailout by freezing the remaining $350B.
If we express each cost as it relates to each taxpaying family in America:
1. The Bridge to Nowhere = $1.50 per family;
2. The auto bailout = $85/family;
3. The $700B bailout = $5,000/family - and equals more than the entire cost of the Iraq war and twice the cost of Bill Clintons defense budget cuts in 8 years.
Either people dont care or they dont know... I believe they care!
By passing my legislation S3697:
When Secretary of the Treasury Hank Paulson sold the bill of goods to Congress, it was in two increments. He got the first $350B with no strings attached - to do with as he wished... the first time in American history. The second $350B is available unless Congress specifically passes an act to prohibit this from happening.
S. 3697 forces an affirmative vote to justify the second $350B... thats all. But it wont happen unless the American people demand it, because the vast majority in the House and Senate would have to admit they were wrong to vote for it in the first place. It will take the same public outrage that killed the amnesty bill.
How did that happen? YOU - Talk Radio and TV.
How bad was the $700B bailout:
1. It was the largest single expenditure in American history;
2. It was the largest transfer of power in American history to an unelected bureaucrat to do with as he wished;
3. The money was used in a manner other than as promised... to buy damaged assets, but it was given to favored banks and friends of Sec. Paulson.
4. Now, Sec. Paulson says he wont use the second $350B, but will Punt it to Obama. So when Barak Obama walks into the White House, there will be $350B on the welcome mat for him to spend as he wishes with no oversight.
>>This is an UNCONSTITUTIONAL diversion of funds appropriated for a completely different purpose, and appears to be a criminal act.<<
No, it’s dishonest and despicable but not illegal. They put language in the Taxpayer Asset Removal Plan that allows them to do pretty much whatever they want.
The costs you refer to have restructuring cost included so this is not really true...we need to save the Auto industry. Also, don’t kid yourself about Ford. I know people who work for them. They are in trouble also.
“UNCONSTITUTIONAL”
That is what I was thinking but I’m certainly no expert. LOL
“The German cars are never in the shop?”
yours maybe...BUT the historical stats from other owners say otherwise...
and expensive as heck to repair...
Where have I heard that before?
“Have a Merry Christmas.”
And a very Merry Christmas to you and yours!
Now go out an buy a new Chevy Corvette!
It’ll do wonders for you! LOL
>>Im sure in 3 months President Bush... will do nothing<<
He would probably want to help Obama with amnesty, but Obama won’t want an extremy unpopular ex-POTUS “helping” him.
You cannot drive them until they quit like a common American agricultural pile of junk. You have to maintain them periodically. It is no different than having any other exotic. If you like Ferraris, you have to constantly keep them in tune. It is part of the owner's responsibility.
But, like the American auto makers themselves and their labor unions, the word "responsibility" goes right down the crapper when someone actually is expected to do some work.
If anyone complains about prices, they have never had to pay for a Jaguar.
And, American repair shops have been gouging people for years... it doesn't cost any more for a brake job on a Beemer than it does for a Corvette.
My old Jaguar XJS has real inboard racing brakes and three master cylinders. In a shop it would cost at least 3k for a complete brake job. Doing it myself, and in time before damage occurs, costs considerably less.
My sister had one, and the engine mounts broke (not the bolts the MOUNTS!). Dang motor spun 90 degrees under the hood and died right in the parking lot.
Until that time, she had been driving an Accord of some year for years (they liked to trade in alot). Never again.
Yea, well you keep supporting the Brits & the Krauts and we’ll keep supporting Americans...I still like to look in the mirror when I shave.
Yep. Cars don’t have ‘personalities” today and havn’t for many years. Back in the 40’s, 50’s and 60’s a casual glance could tell you the year, make and most of the time the model of a car. Today, they all look the same.
Right now both our vehicles are paid in full—Jeep Grand Cherokee and Ford Ranger. Wont be too long before the Ranger will have to be replaced, probably will go with a small car. Just not sure which. I’m liking the Toyotas, but since Ford did not take the bailout, might stick with them. We will see. Right now I’m liking not having car payments. this is a first for us. We would have ran out and bought another as soon as one was paid for, but not during these uncertain times. We’re trying to live by the words of “if it aint broke dont fix it, and if you don’t need it, don’t buy it” (compliments of my son-in-law).
Every one of the "Founding Fathers" were Englishmen. It helps to remember your own history.
If your allegiance is to the corporations and not to the principles of America's founders, I never knew you...
I still like to look in the mirror when I shave.
Your own image is of more fascination than the principles of free enterprise???
That is not the America I want to live in... you pay for it, I ain't buying...
