Jesse Jackson Jr.: I Am Not a Target In Blagojevich Probe
After being identified as Senate Candidate 5 in the complaint filed in Tuesdays arrest of Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich, Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. held a press conference this afternoon on Capitol Hill, saying he is innocent in Blagojevichs alleged schemes to sell President-elect Barack Obamas Senate seat to the highest bidder.
Know this: I spoke to the U.S. attorneys office on Tuesday and they shared with me that I am not a target of this investigation and I am not accused of any misconduct, Jackson told reporters this afternoon. He did not take any questions, but added that he is scheduled to speak further with federal authorities this week and will cooperate fully and completely with the inquiry.
Jackson hired long-time Chicago lawyer James Montgomery following Blagojevichs arrest. In a statement, Montgomery said his client is not a target of the investigation.
In the complaint, an unnamed emissary of Senate Candidate 5 allegedly said the candidate was willing to raise significant sums for Blagojevichs re-election in exchange for the Senate seat.
Jackson denied the allegation. I never sent a message or an emissary to the governor, he said, stressing that his meeting this week to discuss the Senate seat with the governor was their first meeting in four years.
I thought, mistakenly, that the process was fair, he said.
Echoing Obama, Jackson called on Blagojevich to resign and remove himself from the process of selecting the next senator because anyone he selects would be too severely tainted to serve the state effectively and without suspicion.
Jackson did not address whether he would continue to seek the Senate seat.

True, I am sure to some degree. But then Fitz just frogmarched a Governor out of his bedroom yesterday. ;^)
This moment calls for the song: Freebird by Lynyrd Skynyrd./Just Asking - seoul62......
“Yes but I wonder why they arrest and disclose the operation so early. Was the operation compromised thus the quick arrest.”
I’m wondering the same thing. If they had waited a little longer, they could have gotten Jackson Jr. actually exchanging quid pro quo. I think Fitz said yesterday that he moved when he did because the Tribune was going to go with the story. So did the Tribune say that to protect Jackson Jr. from getting in any deeper?? The Chicago Media is part of the problem as far as corruption goes, not part of the solution, IMO.
Uh, oh! Jesse’s a target.

Was that wrong? I tell ya, I gotta plead ignorance on this. If anyone told me that sort of thing was frowned upon, I never would have done it."
This whole thing is worse than Watergate...probably right up there with Whitewatergate( if anything could ever be completely proved..where all the dead bodies are hid).
Was it written in the complaint that candidate #5 offered $ and is there also proof Jesse,Jr IS in fact conadidate #5?
but does he have a wide stance?
Anyone care to bet me a Buffalo nickel that Junior will soon find he is the target of his own Federal corruption probe.
Anyone care to wager on how many hours of tape that Fits has with Jesse Jackson Senior’s voice on it...??
Clinton did a great job of educating the DemRat Party.
