Iran Deploys Troops, Ballistic Missiles To Eritrea
The Cutting Edge ^ | December 8, 2008

Iranian ships and submarines have deployed an undisclosed number of Iranian troops and weapons at the Eritrean port town of Assab, according to opposition groups, foreign diplomats, and NGOs in the area.

The city of Assab sits at the Horn of Africa in the Arabian Sea. As such, Assab offers a strategic position as the world nervously eyes the precarious routes through which a seaborne oil traverses daily.

Local sources have reported that Iran recently sent soldiers and a large number of long-range and ballistic missiles. The military basing came after Iran signed an accord with Eritrea to revamp the Russian-built refinery used by the Eritrean Oil Company, also known as Assab Oil Company.

“and a large number of long-range and ballistic missiles” = a large number of targets already in the mission planning computers.

The only strategic point I see in that region is its close to a choke point where the Red Sea meets the Gulf of Aden. Any missle layout would almost have to be long range since there are no targets nearby. Wonder how many anti-ship missiles they deployed.

Well, if Eritrea allows Iran to do this... but I don't get it... the agreement was to revamp a refinery... why do you need to bring in the military base? Is Eritrea at war with someone and the refinery is vulnerable?

I just checked the CIA Factbook... apparently Eritrea and Ethiopia have some ongoing difficulties with the border... perhaps that’s it... or Iran is pushing it because they are a bunch of butt-heads and are trying to exacerbate the region to increase the price of oil again.

It begins....

Are they trying to control the Gulf of Aden AND the Persian Gulf? Are they surrounding the Arabian peninsula with missiles from all directions? Why Eritrea? That’s kinda strange...

Thats easy - it controls the sea lanes coming out of the Red Sea. They could interdict US assets moving through
the Suez Canal, shipping moving into/out of Eilat, West Coast of Saudi and the port of Aquba. They could place AA missiles there which would make Israeli flights over the area impossible (how they got to Entebbe for the raid).

This is a very provacative move.

Iran now has a military presence on both sides of the Arabian peninsula -- on the Red Sea and on the "Persian" Gulf. The Saudis must be feeling the squeeze.
