Tax cows, hogs for passing gas, burping? EPA proposes doing so due to methane's impact as a greenhouse gas
MONTGOMERY, Ala. - For farmers, this stinks: Belching and gaseous cows and hogs could start costing them money if a federal proposal to charge fees for air-polluting animals becomes law.
Farmers so far are turning their noses up at the notion, which is one of several put forward by the Environmental Protection Agency after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in 2007 that greenhouse gases amount to air pollution. Livestock emit methane, a key greenhouse gas tied to global warming.
"This is one of the most ridiculous things the federal government has tried to do," said Alabama Agriculture Commissioner Ron Sparks, an outspoken opponent of the proposal.

If my husband got taxed for farting the deficit would be next to nothing.
But when will they tax congress?? and other politicans??
If it moves, tax it. If it keeps moving, regulate it. And If it stops moving, subsidize it. Ronald Reagan................
Now if we could just figure out a way to tax those volcanoes - especially the undersea vocanoes that erupt under ice shelves.
IOW, tax the politicians.
If it’s such a big problem, how about just giving the poor beasts Tums and Beano?
What happens if the cows and hogs refuse to pay the tax - off with their heads?
This is absolutely absurd.
God gave us livestock as a means to provide for ourselves and others. Let’s bring these EPA officials to market and butcher them.
Given that the PETA-philes are pushing this, I’d bet that this has nothing to do with the environment, and everything to do with attempting to drive the businesses in the meat animal industry into bankruptcy.
Folks, this is NOT a joke.
The Feds are searching for any source of revenue.
The price is $50/ton...
How do you ‘weigh’ a ton of CO2?
Strange New World eh?
Gee, which catagory does Rosie O fall under? Cow or pig...you make the call.....
By volume and mass.
The real problem here is that a government official would have to watch (and smell) all of the 'outgassing'... and provide documentation, in triplicate, submitted to the Board of Obnixious and Renewable Gasses (BORG). Then, this is approved by the Federal Administration Reviewer of Things (FART).
I think she’s related to Jabba the Hutt, but he disowned her, so it’s not general knowledge.
It’s not a “tax”. It’s a “fee”.
If it was a “tax” one might sue on the grounds it’s unconstitutional.
Our congressional “leaders” are much bigger gasbags. Tax them first.
