A Florida tourism group has dropped its long-standing opposition to offshore oil and gas drilling, saying that a cheap national fuel supply would trigger a boom for the Sunshine State's No. 1 industry.
When gasoline prices skyrocketed to more than $4 per gallon this summer tourist spots such as Florida suffered, as would-be vacationers stayed home. So in response, the Florida Association of Convention and Visitors Bureaus (FACVB) has adopted a new policy that encourages a "comprehensive, long-term energy policy" that includes increased oil and natural gas production in the Gulf of Mexico along Florida's coast.

OIL AND GAS SEEPAGE FROM OCEAN FLOOR REDUCED BY OIL PRODUCTION
I knew that fuel prices would bite tourism in the a**
They even support it up to 30 miles, which is the logical limit.
Slant drilling should be able to take care of the rest of the distance.
Personally, I think that presented in the right way, offshore drilling could be made into a tourist attraction in it’s own right.
Sell tours of the drilling platform, and people would pay big bucks.
Leave the fairytails’’ at disney world and get yer head out Fla.
Some years ago during a slowdown in North Sea drilling I had to go to a semi-submersible anchored in a firth. When I went ashore and called for a hotel room part of the sales pitch was the lovely view of the rigs. I always wondered how many were impressed by that presentation.
You know of some wonder technology the oil patch hasn't heard of?
Not 30 miles, not even half of that.
Horizontal drilling has not yet reached 8 miles, but with the development of a new rig BP should reach slightly past that far with the drilling of the Liberty Field offshore North Coast Alaska.
Reality smacks them up the side of the head and they wake up. It's what reasonabley intelligent people have been saying forever.
How many orange crops will have to be lost before they realize global warming is a hoax?
Growing up in New England, I always wondered why so many tourist dollars were spent by people traveling to see the color of leaves change (it happened every year in my backyard...and I had to rake them up).
On my initial visit to Santa Barbara, or somewhere on the west coast, I was impressed by the lighted off shore rigs that I saw during my off shore night flights’ approach.
Similar, perhaps, to leaf peepers, visitors to New York City’s skyscrapers or tar pits?
There are many impressive sights to be seen in this country, both natural and man made.
I’m NOT impressed by the hypocritical “ethics” of those who abide by them only when it doesn’t affect them or eventually their income.
Perhaps, the ‘tourist’ industry should “contribute” a percentage of their income to the oil rigs?
Y’know, spreading the wealth around, or as retribution?
Drilling rigs are GREAT FISHING REEFS, They should have built more decades ago. We’d have solved two problems at the same time..............
And the nude beach goers had nothing to do with it?.............
The vast majority of those visiting the beach would cause you to close the blinds in case of nudity.
Woohoo. Great (even better) fishing off Tarpon Springs in the future!
We get a few Europeans here every year that don’t know that you can’t sunbathe in the nude or topless in Florida. The sheriff’s department just tells them to put their clothes back on.........
It’s all about the money.
Florida is bad for tourists because they get taxed very highly (hotel, car rental, and so forth) for just visiting the place!
