Personally, I think that presented in the right way, offshore drilling could be made into a tourist attraction in it’s own right.
Sell tours of the drilling platform, and people would pay big bucks.

When gasoline prices skyrocketed to more than $4 per gallon this summer tourist spots such as Florida suffered, as would-be vacationers stayed home. Reality smacks them up the side of the head and they wake up. It's what reasonabley intelligent people have been saying forever.
How many orange crops will have to be lost before they realize global warming is a hoax?

Florida is bad for tourists because they get taxed very highly (hotel, car rental, and so forth) for just visiting the place!

I'd say that with prices as low as they are today, it would probably be in everyone's best interests to wait and not drill immediately.
