China reports huge increase in children sickened by tainted milk

Mon Dec 1, 10:40 pm ET

BEIJING (AFP) – China has dramatically raised the tally of children sickened by dairy products laced with the industrial chemical melamine to 294,000, more than five times the original figure.

In a late-night statement on Monday, the health ministry also said six babies may have died from consuming poisoned milk, up from a previous confirmed death toll of three.

The updated figures showed the problem over contaminated milk in China this year was much greater than the government had acknowledged for months, after it said in late September that just 53,000 babies had fallen ill.

Melamine is a chemical normally used to make plastics, but it emerged in September that it had been routinely mixed into watered-down Chinese milk and dairy products to give the impression of higher protein content.

If they keep this up, they won’t need their 1-child policy anymore.

Is USA powdered milk sold in China?

If so and I was a Mom I would be seeking some alternative about right now.

Or Ross Lab USA made formula.

For those who don’t know how melamine gets into the food: Melamine is intentionally added to feedstock, milk, and other food products in China because it makes diluted materials appear to be higher in protein content than they really are. The melamine raises the total nitrogen content detected by simple protein tests, fooling customers into thinking that they are getting the amount of protein that they paid for. In other words - this is murder, not stupidity.

We get lots of food products from China, especially ingredients that are used for prepackaged foods.

I hope they are taking a serious look right now at these ingredients. I am terribly afraid that we will find we have been consuming Chinese melamine. They did it to our pet food, they’ve done it to their own children. I can’t see how it’s not here.

We need to take a look at everything. I found a Minute Maid orange juice container that had wording to the effect that it could have been made in China. I pitched it.

There are a lot of cheap fish products that come from China. I tried them once, and they were tough and dry. No the probably don't contain melamine, but I am not going to buy anymore.

"[melanine] had been routinely mixed into watered-down Chinese milk and dairy products to give the impression of higher protein content."

It's so great when the government runs things! Government bureaucrats are so wise and enlightened! You might know someone who is a government bureaucrat like that guy down the street for example who is always watering his lawn and yelling at the neighborhood kids to stop throwing apples at his house! LIFELONG democrat and future clerk in the US HEALTH CARE system!

I keep reading these reports and am wondering if there is something going on in China other than greed?

An un-reported food shortage?

Mao
"Got milk, comrade?"Oh, you can be sure there's lots more than simple greed at work here. It is the product of a an atheistic culture, devoid of conscience; where individuals are answerable only to the State...and the State is their partner in crime. There is no higher authority. It's the belief that "some animals are more equal than others"; that willfully and knowingly engaging in the poisoning of children of the masses is perfectly acceptable in the pursuit of State profit. How else could one possibly engage such behavior?

Any food product that my wife isn’t positive about, she has me look up a telephone number and call the customer service department. I ask if the Chinese are involved in the processing of the product. If the answer is yes, it gets tossed.

XCEPT corn syrup is now genetically improved...

I eat spoiled fresh fruit over any thing in a box.

Food that needs that much churchin is just sick wrong.

Unless you do it in small loads...

” U.S. Infant Formula May Be Contaminated with Melamine;”
Basically bogus. The amount is incredibly tiny. A fraction of one one millionth.

Exactly. But will officials from the FDA step up and SAY that?
