ANYONE under 1 year of age could get a Hawaiian birth certificate until 1972.
Department of Health, State of Hawaii ^

Posted on 11/28/2008 2:37:01 PM PST by E. Pluribus Unum

Who is Eligible to Apply for the Issuance of a Late Birth Certificate in Lieu of a Certificate of Hawaiian Birth?

The Certificate of Hawaiian Birth program was established in 1911, during the territorial era, to register a person born in Hawaii who was one year old or older and whose birth had not been previously registered in Hawaii. The Certificate of Hawaiian Birth Program was terminated in 1972, during the statehood era.

Certified copies of a Certificate of Hawaiian Birth may be requested following the procedures for certified copies of standard birth certificates (see Certified Copies). The eligibility requirements for issuance of a certified copy of a standard birth certificate apply to Certificates of Hawaiian Birth. And the same fees charged for standard birth certificates are charged for Certificates of Hawaiian Birth. Copies of the set of testimony used to establish a Certificate of Hawaiian Birth may also be requested, and an additional fee is charged for each copy of the set of testimony.

Any person to whom a Certificate of Hawaiian Birth has been issued may submit a request to amend an entry, including a legal change of name, on an existing Certificate. A request to amend a Certificate of Hawaiian Birth will, however, be considered to be and treated as an application with the Department of Health for registration of a late certificate of birth in current use, unless a standard birth certificate for that person already exists in the vital records of the Department of Health. Should there be a situation of dual registration, the requested amendment will be made to the standard birth certificate on file if the required documentary evidence in support of the amendment has been submitted and evaluated to be adequate. If there is no standard birth certificate on file, an applicant is required to submit documentary evidence of the birth facts necessary to support of the registration of the late certificate of birth. If approved, the late birth certificate will be registered in place of the Certificate of Hawaiian Birth, which must then be surrendered to the Department of Health.

I don’t know what the records show. I suppose it would be pretty easy to email the author of this story and find out what research he did. Someone in DC or in HI could also go to the library and find a city directory from 1961 or 1962. That would show the address for the Dunhams.

Unfortunately, I don’t live in HI or DC, so I can’t do it. Am starting a 24 hour shift tomorrow, but will email the reporter when I get off duty.

“Why the hell are we and not the DNC situating his first home?”

The only answer that I have is that it is the DNC, and I don’t think they are capable of doing much of anything.

I don’t know if a current article in the Honolulu Advertiser is enough to authenticate this.

I haven’t seen anything on any of these threads that corroborates this; Chief Engineer has done incredible research and last I’ve seen nothing was dug up that listed this address in connection with the names Obama or Dunham.

I contacted Kapiolani to find out when it was merged with Kauikeolani and they responded it was in 1976. I also asked them about whether it had been remodelled because 0 said that when his father came to visit in 1971 they would be going by the remodelled hospital where he was born. They said that Kapiolani had been renovated and expanded in the 70’s to anticipate the merger but did not give me a date. but I don’t think much would have been done in 71 to qualify as remodelling since that was a full 5 years before the merger officially took place.

See post #176. Chief Engineer has researched this as thoroughly as possible. It would be nice if some real estate person could provide the name of the owners in 1961 though.

After my shift tomorrow, I will try to contact the author and find out what, if any, research he did into the address. It wouldn’t be hard to find because he lives in HI and would have access to old city directories, and phone books. It is possible that he used the newspaper announcement and didn’t do any further research. If the duhnams did live there, they might have rented. Their name wouldn’t show up on property records, but it would be easily located in phone directories from 1961.

Do those announcements come from the parents or does the newspaper just print the recorded births from the clerk's office?

Actually, either way, the announcement in the paper proves nothing because after Ann Dunham gave birth in Kenya she left for Hawaii about 4 days later and registered his birth there.

That was not exactly directed at you, but rather at the fact that a newspaper announcement appeared announcing Obambi’s birth.

Late at night in my part of the world. I’ve noticed that my writing loses some of its clarity after about 10:00 p.m..

Sorry for the confusion. :)

Several months ago I had to order my adult son’s birth certificate and it wasn’t easy. Sworn affidavit and several forms to fill out. And I’m his mom!

Don’t know if this has been posted yet on FR, I just received it from ‘ourtragedpatriots’:

“Hon. James David Manning tells people to support Alan Keyes and others who are demanding to see if Barack Hussein Obama is eligible to be President. [AS WELL AS HIS APPLICATION TO COLUMBIA {which he says lists Obama as a foreign student}] Message was preached on Saturday, 15 November 2008.”

So, if true,...why didn’t we see McCain, OR, tell-it-like-it-is Sara Palin demanding the same?

While Madelyn Dunham and her husband from what I have read had strong communist leanings which I do have issue with, I also would not fault them for trying to ensure security for their grandchild. I would do the same. My response was regarding others saying how would she have know he might be President...she didn’t. She just certainly knew that in 1961 it would be better for him to be legitimate and entitled to American services— he said his mother got food stamps. Those services would have been easy if he were American.

The issue of legitimacy would be important because I question how Obama’s mother could ever have been legally married to Obama Sr. since he was still married to his wife in Kenya with whom he had 2 more children after BHO.

Food Stamps were a part of the "Great Society" .

Kansas couple Stan Dunham, a furniture store operator, and Madelyn Dunham ("Toot," to Obama), a bank cashier, had come to Hawai'i in 1960 and moved into the Kalaniana'ole location.

I have seen Stan called a furniture salesman, now he has been promoted to an operator, is that a manager or an owner. "Toot" was called a teller and later raising to be cashier.

The family median income in 1961 was $5200, a house was $12,672, new car $2,610 and minimum wage $1.00. A large upscale house with a cottage on the grounds, sounds out of reach for a furniture salesman/operator and teller/cashier to buy or rent, but the cottage would be affordable for them to rent.

It must have been rough times later for the Dunhams to move out of the big house into an apartment, but would have an improvement over a 450 foot cottage.

Well I imagine there were some forms of social services in 1961 if not that. Just the illegitimacy issue was a scandal in 1961. I remember my parents whispering about it

There's a lot of false/misinformation out there. Time to see the original.

I had seen an observation by a Freeper that we are being thrown a "red herring". With this I would wholeheartedly agree. I wonder what "genius" is now chuckling at these entries and subsequent detective work? Possibly some lurker out there.

Now it is maybe just me, but unless someone noticed this, the letter K in Barack seems to be changed- one a capital letter and another the correct small letter. Foolery at work here. In my case it is good for the mind. Keeps one active in that department. As is said, the real question is never mind the newspaper, where is the true copy of the long form?

I shudder to think the uses of such a true copy would have to the unscrupulous who might pressure such a pure spirit as the President- elect. (Chuckle)

Amended birth certificates in Hawaii contain everything the original did except for the incorrect items having a line drawn through them and the amendments clearly identified as amendments. The procedure does not allow for throwing away the original and sticking another document into the typewriter. All changes are evident.

Previous stories in “The Honolulu Advertiser” had mentioned the Dunhams living at the 2277Kamehameha Ave. address before moving to the house on University Ave. I am betting that the parents rented the apartment on Alexander St. for Ann and Jr when they came back to HI from WA. Realizing it would be easier to live with her parents while attending school, Ann would have given up the apartment and moved in with her parents at the home on Kamehameha Ave, before they moved to the home on University Ave. When Ann married Lolo and moved to Indonesia with Jr the Dunhams moved into the apartment on Beretania St.

The food stamp program in HI in 1961 was a pilot project which was made into a permanent program in 1964. However, Ann was not living in Hawaii between August 1961 and January of 1963. She might have applied for food stamps while living in the apartment on Alexander Street but once she moved into the house on Kamehameha Ave. with her parents she would not have qualified for food stamps. She may have applied for food stamps when she returned to HI in 1972 while she was taking graduate studies for her M.A. but we don’t know. At that time Barry was living with his grandparents and Ann lived in a small apartment on Poku with a 2 year old Maya. Ann left HI in 1974 with Maya, returning to Indonesia to do her fieldwork.
