Well I imagine there were some forms of social services in 1961 if not that. Just the illegitimacy issue was a scandal in 1961. I remember my parents whispering about it

The food stamp program in HI in 1961 was a pilot project which was made into a permanent program in 1964. However, Ann was not living in Hawaii between August 1961 and January of 1963. She might have applied for food stamps while living in the apartment on Alexander Street but once she moved into the house on Kamehameha Ave. with her parents she would not have qualified for food stamps. She may have applied for food stamps when she returned to HI in 1972 while she was taking graduate studies for her M.A. but we don’t know. At that time Barry was living with his grandparents and Ann lived in a small apartment on Poku with a 2 year old Maya. Ann left HI in 1974 with Maya, returning to Indonesia to do her fieldwork.
