More than 3,000 people, including longtime Mormon critic James Dobson of Focus on the Family, have signed an online petition thanking the LDS Church for its efforts on behalf of California's traditional marriage initiative known as Proposition 8.
"Anyone who participated in this process has come to admire the competence, diligence and moral courage that so many members of your faith community displayed as part of this coalition effort -- as Catholics, Evangelicals, Mormons and people of other faith communities all came together to fight this great battle for marriage," says the petition, which is addressed to LDS President Thomas S. Monson.
The petition condemns recent protests against Mormon temples and members, saying: "It is deeply unfair, and contrary to the best American traditions, that any faith community, much less a minority one, should be singled out and attacked in this way by powerful, well-funded political forces determined to 'make them pay' for participating in the normal political processes of democracy."
The online effort was created by the National Organization for Marriage, a nonprofit group in Princeton, N.J., organized to lobby, organize and collect donations on behalf of ballot measures defining marriage as solely between a man and a woman.
"We wanted to do something to show we are united in our condemnation of religious bigotry of any form," Brian Brown, NOM's executive director, said Tuesday.
The organization includes Advertisement
people of various faith groups, including Catholics, and Evangelicals. Matthew Holland, son of LDS Apostle Jeffrey R. Holland, is on the board of directors.
The letter to Monson was written Nov. 15 and signed by representatives of several pro-family groups in addition to Dobson's, including Donald Wildmon of the American Family Association, Charles Colson of Prison Fellowship, Tony Perkins of Family Research Council, Paul Weyrich of Free Congress Foundation, Richard Land of the Southern Baptist Convention, and Gary Bauer of American Values. It was presented to Monson almost immediately.
This week, organizers posted the petition at abovethehate.com and invited the public to sign.
"We've been amazed by the outpouring of support," Brown said. "People are so grateful that we are standing side by side with [Mormons]."
Organizers will continue to collect signatures for another month, he said, and present the final list to Monson sometime after that.
Also on Tuesday, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops wrote to Monson, offering "prayerful support and steadfast solidarity" to the LDS Church for its efforts on behalf of Proposition 8.
"We have been especially troubled by the reports of explicit and direct targeting of your church personnel and facilities as the objects of hostility and abuse," the bishops wrote. "We pray that prudence and healing may prevail."
We pledge to work with you and for you not only to protect marriage, but to protect the rights of all religious citizens, including the LDS Church, to participate freely (without threats of retribution or retaliation) in the political processes of this country in defense of the Judeo-Christian valuesand the common goodwe hold so dear.
SNIP
I wonder just WHICH ONES they have in mind, since the Organization® has NEVER renounced their opinion of 'Christians' described so vividly in The First Book of Nephi Chapter 14...
So...
...you think we should HATE the HOMO's??
Frankly, I haven’t seen any Mormons pointing fingers at other churches. It has been members of other churches pointing fingers at other churches. Maybe I’ve missed some Mormon posters, but I don’t think so.
some didn’t
that is a fact not all catholic , Anglican churches did
if we were as organised as them and not as liberal we would not let any homo’s get away with anything.
look at the north east where most catholics live
they go to church but have homo’s running around, liberals getting their way etc
so yes they are right but I think you seem to have some sort of problem with Mormons
would you vote for a Mormon Elsie?
Like you said in so many words they do not preach to the right god like you,
it is that view which will tear us all apart so now will you sign or just keep going on about theirs is not the right god bla bla
I do yes
I do
no problem with that they are trying to ruin our country.
you on the other hand have a problem with Mormons because you think your God is the right one
I mean come on Elsie have you seen what you have wrote, your view is very clear about them
holes mountains etc
molehills mountains
Elise dear you lost me
here is what we have the Mormon church gave half of the money to defeat homo marriage and good for them
they are now taking the brunt of the homo’s
and you will not sign to say well done Mormons because you think your God is the right one and there’s is not.
Meanwhile Elsie the homo’s get to do their agenda
look if we all stay together instead of thinking who has the right religion we can defeat homo’s
it is that simple but coming out with they do not follow God is just plain , well wrong to me
yes I do of course I hate them, I am not going to love them am I
why would I like someone who is trying to ruin my children’s future ruin this country
what we should all love each other while those who do not think like that like homo’s and binladen take us over
sounds a bit like chamberlain
exactly it seems Elsie has a big problem with a certain religion while ignoring who the real enemy is
Elsie thinks her religion and her God is the only one and seems to have a big problem with anyone who has a different religion
so sad
it is amazing to see folk like Elsie think she has the right religion and have a prejudice against those who do not have her view.
They helped us and maybe just maybe if it wasn;t for them , for the black churches and the Latinos we would have lost but no she has more feelings against one church instead of people who laugh at her who mock her, who want to silence her and who wants to destroy this country and how we live
I asked to get signatures from the historic Episcopal church in my town and even though the vicar was for it he said that he would not mention it.
I asked around at coffee later and about half would not put their signatures down.
so sad, one woman has 3 stickers on her car praising Dems and yet they stand against everything she is supposed to follow in her faith.
I do not even bother going to church now and just have my kids and I say prayers at night before sleep and meals
correct we have to stay together always no matter what religion for if we do not we will be defeated and be silenced
thank you for a great post
Yes.
If it had been Mitt against Obama, Romney would have gotten my vote.
By the time my state's primary came around, Mitt was already out.
Would I vote for a Muslim?
A Wiccan
A tree worshipper?
A perswon of unknown religiousosity?
I ONLY have the chance to 'vote' for someone who is PRE-SELECTED for me.
Likewise THEIR view about me.
Joe Smith started it all; calling ALL Christian divisions apostate and abominable.
The MORMON Organization has NOT retracted any of their feelings toward Christians other than to say "We are christians too; why don't you like us?"
And they (individuals; who did exactly as their leaders told them to do) are complaining that 'others did not do enough'.
They equate disagreements over their religion as HATE.
Come on, you've seen it in this thread.
Genesis 13:13 Now
the men of Sodom were wicked and were sinning greatly against the LORD.
Genesis 18:20-21
20. Then the LORD said, "The outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah is so great and
Genesis 19:4-7
4. Before they had gone to bed,
Psalms 12:8 The wicked freely strut about when what is vile is honored among men. More? |
Isaiah 3:9 The look on their faces testifies against them; they parade their sin like Sodom; they do not hide it. Woe to them! They have brought disaster upon themselves.
2 Peter 2:13b Their idea of pleasure is to carouse in broad daylight. They are blots and blemishes, reveling in their pleasures while they feast with you.
Ezekiel 16:49-50
49. "`Now this was the sin of your sister Sodom: She and her daughters were arrogant, overfed and unconcerned; they did not help the poor and needy.
50. They were haughty and did detestable things before me. Therefore I did away with them as you have seen.
1. But there were also false prophets among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you. They will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the sovereign Lord who bought them--bringing swift destruction on themselves.
2. Many will follow their shameful ways and will bring the way of truth into disrepute.
3. In their greed these teachers will exploit you with stories they have made up. Their condemnation has long been hanging over them, and their destruction has not been sleeping.
4. For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but sent them to hell, putting them into gloomy dungeons to be held for judgment;
5. if he did not spare the ancient world when he brought the flood on its ungodly people, but protected Noah, a preacher of righteousness, and seven others;
6. if he condemned the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah by burning them to ashes, and made them an example of what is going to happen to the ungodly;
7. and if he rescued Lot, a righteous man, who was distressed by the filthy lives of lawless men
8. (for that righteous man, living among them day after day, was tormented in his righteous soul by the lawless deeds he saw and heard)--
9. if this is so, then the Lord knows how to rescue godly men from trials and to hold the unrighteous for the day of judgment, while continuing their punishment.
10. This is especially true of those who follow the corrupt desire of the sinful nature and despise authority. Bold and arrogant, these men are not afraid to slander celestial beings;
11. yet even angels, although they are stronger and more powerful, do not bring slanderous accusations against such beings in the presence of the Lord.
12. But these men blaspheme in matters they do not understand. They are like brute beasts, creatures of instinct, born only to be caught and destroyed, and like beasts they too will perish.
13. They will be paid back with harm for the harm they have done. Their idea of pleasure is to carouse in broad daylight. They are blots and blemishes, reveling in their pleasures while they feast with you.
But there IS hope!!!
1 Corinthians 6:9-11
9. Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived:
Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders
10. nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.
11. And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.
If you could NOT change, you would be in most pitiful shape.....
Do you HATE Democrats?
You have missed other threads on this subject where I did give the MORMONs credit for their actions in this instance.
What I point out now is their harping that 'other churches didn't do as much as us'; DISGUISING it as a call for UNITY Against the FAGS!
“..and Freeper GonzoII have signed an online petition thanking the LDS”.
