Online Petition Thanks LDS Church For Prop. 8 Support (Mormons Backed By Social Conservatives Alert)
Salt Lake Tribune ^ | 11/25/2008 | Peggy Fletcher Stack

More than 3,000 people, including longtime Mormon critic James Dobson of Focus on the Family, have signed an online petition thanking the LDS Church for its efforts on behalf of California's traditional marriage initiative known as Proposition 8.

"Anyone who participated in this process has come to admire the competence, diligence and moral courage that so many members of your faith community displayed as part of this coalition effort -- as Catholics, Evangelicals, Mormons and people of other faith communities all came together to fight this great battle for marriage," says the petition, which is addressed to LDS President Thomas S. Monson.

The petition condemns recent protests against Mormon temples and members, saying: "It is deeply unfair, and contrary to the best American traditions, that any faith community, much less a minority one, should be singled out and attacked in this way by powerful, well-funded political forces determined to 'make them pay' for participating in the normal political processes of democracy."

The online effort was created by the National Organization for Marriage, a nonprofit group in Princeton, N.J., organized to lobby, organize and collect donations on behalf of ballot measures defining marriage as solely between a man and a woman.

"We wanted to do something to show we are united in our condemnation of religious bigotry of any form," Brian Brown, NOM's executive director, said Tuesday.

The organization includes Advertisement

people of various faith groups, including Catholics, and Evangelicals. Matthew Holland, son of LDS Apostle Jeffrey R. Holland, is on the board of directors.

The letter to Monson was written Nov. 15 and signed by representatives of several pro-family groups in addition to Dobson's, including Donald Wildmon of the American Family Association, Charles Colson of Prison Fellowship, Tony Perkins of Family Research Council, Paul Weyrich of Free Congress Foundation, Richard Land of the Southern Baptist Convention, and Gary Bauer of American Values. It was presented to Monson almost immediately.

This week, organizers posted the petition at abovethehate.com and invited the public to sign.

"We've been amazed by the outpouring of support," Brown said. "People are so grateful that we are standing side by side with [Mormons]."

Organizers will continue to collect signatures for another month, he said, and present the final list to Monson sometime after that.

Also on Tuesday, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops wrote to Monson, offering "prayerful support and steadfast solidarity" to the LDS Church for its efforts on behalf of Proposition 8.

"We have been especially troubled by the reports of explicit and direct targeting of your church personnel and facilities as the objects of hostility and abuse," the bishops wrote. "We pray that prudence and healing may prevail."

I support Prop 8 and the sanctity of marriage...but cannot sign any congratulatory letter to the LDS...sorry, their jesus and my Jesus are completely different. I stand for the one and only Jesus Christ...not this manufactured Joe Smith idea of Christ.

If a thug on the street tried to rob you at gunpoint and a bystander intervened and scared the robber away, would you not thank him when you found out that he is a Mormon?

Online Petition Thanks LDS Church For Prop. 8 Support

I want to thank all the folks who worked to stop the Homosexuals in their drive to S&G II; especially those who did their work in obscurity and not needing stroking and acceptance from men.

Matthew 6

 1.  "Be careful not to do your `acts of righteousness' before men, to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven.
 2.  "So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full.
 3.  But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing,
 4.  so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.
 5.  "And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full.
 6.  But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.

The key verse is “to be seen by them.” It speaks to motivation, and—please pay attention—it has absolutely no application in this instance. Quoting this scripture after LDS and other churches have been threatened for their righteous endeavors would be a little bit like chiding General Washington for accepting the presidency after winning the Revolutionary War.

Christians who fought for proposition 8 didn’t do it to be “seen by men.” They did it to protect their children. Wise up.

HUH
it is to say thanks that is all

the homo’s are the enemy here not who decide whose God is the real one

so while you want to fight over who is the real religion they homo’s take advantage

we have proved that if we all stick together we can beat them and yet there is still a section who does not realise this and still wants to play my religion is better or more real than yours
<shakes head?

I can’t even believe I am reading all this

they are the enemy Elsie this is not about my mine is bigger than yours so to speak or better than yours.

They did great, they helped we helped to stop their agenda and they took a big defeat, their church came together and raised a load of cash without it we could and probably would have lost.

many catholic churches didn’t come together, neither did many religions but if we all stay together we can always win instead of playing I don’t like them because they don’t believe the same as me crap

I have never seen our Church crowing about what its members did in California. The Church itself did not give money. The Church quietly asked its members to donate time and money, and they did. Mormons showed up in droves to canvass, put out signs, and man phone banks. There were calls for volunteers for phone banks here in Utah, but no publicity. Other people have pointed out what was done, but not the Church, unless someone asked. It is the homosexuals who have made the biggest issue out of Mormon participation.

You act like our participation in this critical issue was nothing but a cynical publicity stunt, and somehow was ignoble.

Is an explanation really necessary? They were fighting for your kids too. If you weren't helping, or your church wasn't helping, you should be ashamed.

And quoting scripture to justify apathy is particularly disgusting.

Yes, it is the game of divide and conquer. The only thing is they are playing with man’s desire to worship his creator. That links us together and is stronger than them.

I'm sure glad that no one did that; only to point out PRIDE.

Have I said that the Homo's are NOT the enemy?

What I've said is that the MORMONs are complaining that 'other churchs' didn't do as much as they, ahem, did.

I have never seen our Church crowing about what its members did in California.

But you HAVE seen members, right here on FR, stating the opposite: the 'other chuirches' didn't do as much as the LDS Organization® - based in Salt Lake City - headquartered at Temple Square©.

Oh?

Where?

You are getting your reward from some folks - and lambasting the 'other churches' for not doing as much as the MORMON outfit.

They have all been turned into mountains!
