How can the Republican Party rebound? The first step would be to quit letting Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity and Laura Ingraham set its agenda.
A second step would be for congressional Republicans to actually try to help President-elect Barack Obama succeed in addressing the country's dire problems offering better ideas where appropriate and opposing just when necessary, not reflexively.
And the third maybe the biggest one would be for GOP governors to use their posts to show the country how conservatives can solve problems, especially the dismal state of American education and its menacing cousin, lagging American competitiveness.
If one governor would fully implement a widely circulated proposal to transform U.S. education based on having most children graduate after the 10th grade and using the savings to pay teachers like professionals it could serve as a model for the nation and bring the United States back to world standards.
But step 1 is to fire Limbaugh and his ilk as the intellectual bosses of the GOP.
In recent years, Republicans have let right-wing talk-show hosts whip the GOP base into frenzies over immigration, brain-damage victim Terri Schiavo and same-sex marriage that have branded the party as troglodyte.
The result is that the demographic groups representing the future of American politics shifted decisively to the Democratic Party in 2008 Latinos, young people, the well-educated, moderates, working women, first-time voters, suburbanites and seculars.

Then we'll win elections!
What a great idea!
Whatever Mort says ...do the opposite.
Why? Various reasons, but mostly because talk radio is ratings-driven, and because of that it is shallow and generally targets knee-jerk reactions.
What conservatives really need to do, is re-learn how to think. Talk radio is not helpful in that regard; in many respects, it prevents thinking.
Last I checked, as of 9:18AM CST, we still have a 1st Amendment which guarantees freedom of speech. Republicans haven't "let" anybody do anything. It's Republicans talking down to their base which has hurt the GOP. Sorry, but I was under the impression that the goal of government was to serve the interests of the people rather than tell the people what's good for them.

“morton must be jealous.”
Yes. If people would only listen me (mort), then I could get a big fat contract, just like Rush.
The dismal state of American education needs attention, no question about that. Unfortunately Democrats always say that more money and more resources are needed in education. Republicans and conservatives tend to be on defense if they oppose more funding for more school programs.
Political correctness doesn’t allow us to talk about some of the real problems in our schools today. But we know what some of those issues are. Washington, DC, education spending on their K-12 school system is among the highest in the country per capita, yet that school system gets some of the worst results for all that they spend. More money and resources thrown into the mix there will not solve their problems.
BS — did Rush, Sean and Laura want McCain as the nominee?
What a total moron!!!
Me thinks Mort’s hairpiece is on too tight.
Gee Mort, let me guess. Let’s get the “Fairness Doctrine” going! Right!? Help President-elect BO!? How do you do that when you’re a conservative you twit? Help him take us down “Marxist” lane? F%%% You!
Instead of knocking Rush, you should be thankful he's on our side. It is his brand of Conservatism that will lead the party back to victory, not the watered-down, discredited philosophy you and your fellow RINO's espouse.
Get a grip, and stop believing in your own ridiculous delusions.
Has he talked to Al Franken? Franken wrote that famous book “Rush Limbaugh is a Big Fat Idiot”. And if Franken steals his election, he will lecture us on C-Span.
All things are relative...
The solution to the education prob is VOUCHERS. That is what republicans should be pushing.
Sounds like Morty’s trying to threaten some Americans’ he’s not so tolerant of!!
Panic, Mort, panic.
OK Mort, I know your brain has been damaged somehow in recent years, but try to follow the logic:
In 2006, Limbaugh, Hannity and Ingraham railed against the GOP Congress’ despicable spending sprees and lack of any ideological commitment other then getting re-elected.
The GOP congress ignored them, kept serving only themselves, and were shown the door.
In 2008, Limbaugh, Hannity and Ingraham warned us that John McCain would be an ineffective nominee and that if we nominated a “maverick” who acts like a Dem we would lose in the fall.
We nominated McCain, and we lost in the fall.
Now Mort...where exactly did we lose because we followed the Limbaugh, Hannity and Ingraham agenda?
