Racial Disparities Persist Despite Obama Election
One Nation News / The Associated Press ^ | November 23, 2008 | Stephen Ohlemacher

The day after Barack Obama was elected president, Kari Fulton heard a white colleague proclaim that racism in America is dead. She cringed, worrying it might be a sign of flagging interest in the fight against discrimination.

“In reality, racism is still very much alive and well,” said Fulton, who graduated last year from Howard University, a historically black college in the nation’s capital.

Obama’s election has generated a euphoria among African Americans that is palpable. For some, the weight of history has finally been eased after generations of struggling for equality. But amid the postelection glow of racial harmony lurks a sobering fact: Racial disparities persist - in just about every measurable form - and they won’t simply melt away because the nation has an African American president.

Fulton, 23, was part of a group of young African American activists from across the country who worked to register and turn out young African_American voters in the presidential election. The National Coalition on Black Civic Participation brought the group together shortly after the election to learn about converting their enthusiasm into ongoing political activism.

“Election Day was just the beginning,” said Fulton, who lives in Washington and works as an organizer for the Environmental Justice and Climate Change Initiative. “People don’t expect President Obama to be a superhero. We have to solve our own problems.”

The problems are significant.

About a quarter of African Americans live in poverty - nearly three times the rate for white people-at a time when rising budget deficits and expensive corporate bailouts are going to leave little federal money for anti-poverty_programs. The federal budget deficit is likely to hit a record $1 trillion next year.

African_American adults are less likely than white people to have college degrees and more likely to be in prison.

“In reality, racism is still very much alive and well,” said Fulton, who graduated last year from Howard University

There is nothing quite so pure, so untainted, as the self-satisfaction of the recent college graduate.

What I really love is when blacks and white liberals start trotting out the statistics that there is "only such-and-such percentage" of minorities in a given field, sometimes in the twenty-thirty percentile, if not more. What percentage of blacks exactly shouldbe represented, when they are at most 12 percent of the population? Since we have to do things by the numbers, quotas and such, anything over twenty percent is too much representation. Whites are app 70% of the population (for the present), if we are represented at 50% in something, we are under-represented.

Haven’t we all heard of the Caucasian College Fund?
Ninety-five percent of black voters voted for a mixed race negro-caucasian who describes himself as black, but that was not an example of racism. Or was it?

“Racism” will continue to exist so long as African-Americans can use it as an excuse and whites continue to let them get away with it.

I have no history of racial disparity.....I’ve never participated in slavery or the KKK .....as far as I know, none in my family ever has, so I wish they would stop with the generalities....most of us had nothing to do with slavery or the KKK.......

“Racial disparities persist - in just about every measurable form - and they won’t simply melt away because the nation has an African American president.”

Well its done with, people have finally developed a knee jerk reaction that disparity = discrimination.

No doubt about it. Expect at least 4 years of back-to-back non-sequiturs from the press as they drag the country’s political discussion further into madness.

“There is no way...”

Could not agree with you more. In fact, there is a good argument to be made that “reverse” racism is accelerating daily with the election of this black Socialist.

Hold on to your hat —and wallet. Our Republic is changing before our very eyes — and we collectively seem to be asleep to the cultural firestorm about to engulf us. (Shades of Europe — 1938)

“African_American adults are less likely than white people to have college degrees...”

Black people are more likely to consider getting an education as “Actin’ White”. Which they consider a pejorative.

“...and more likely to be in prison.”

The black crime rate in the US is at least ten times that of the Caucasian crime rate.
