WASHINGTON - The White House says President Bush signed into law a bill that Congress approved to keep unemployment checks flowing to jobless Americans through the holiday season.
Bush signed the bill at the White House just before boarding Marine I Friday morning for a short trip to Andrews Air Force Base and a flight to Lima, Peru, to attend the 21-nation Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum.
The Senate approved the bill following an earlier report Thursday saying that new claims by laid-off workers for jobless aid had reached a 16-year high and the number of people looking for work had surged past 10 million.

Mo money, mo money, mo money. Everybody put out your hands! Mo, money, mo money...
High unemployment rates have historically brought out the entrepreneur spirit in anyone with ambition. When the flow of money stops, “honest” people get creative.
They already have a program for people who don’t have a job after 40 some weeks. Its called welfare. Stop with the spending already.
You are an a$$hole.
As someone who’s been a “lurker since the Clinton Impeachment years” you should know by now that your response is not called for. The poster was most likely expressing the frustration that most feel that unemployment benefits beyond a certain time frame become “just welfare”. If you’re going to call someone an asshole, call them an asshole - don’t sugarcoat it.
Wassup with the name calling? You on wlfare or sumpin
“The poster was most likely expressing the frustration that most feel that unemployment benefits beyond a certain time frame become just welfare.”
Your statement accurately captures my sentiment. Thanks!
SOME do. Others die or turn to crime.
“that most feel that unemployment benefits beyond a certain time frame become just welfare.”
Without realizing that the unemployment is less money than the welfare would be.
Lot of people without jobs, lot of people looking for jobs.
Lot of people can’t find a job.

Employers pay taxes to fund the UI system. Very little of the funds come from other taxpayers, so it’s not welfare.
I worked at the Workforce Development agency in a Midwestern state for 14 years.

Well, I guess that explains it
“The benefits paid to jobless workers are financed through federal and state unemployment taxes paid by employers like you. To promote the two goals noted above, every state has a system that bases your unemployment tax rate on the amount of benefits that has been paid to your former workers.”

When any one gets taxed, be it an employer or a citizen to give money to another person who is not producing, it's welfare, no matter what other name you want to give it.
entrepeneurial spirit only thrives when those engaging in it know that they will reap the rewards of their work instead of having it stolen from them at the end of a gov’t gun barrel.
Pretty much all of FDR’s “New Deal” and LBJ’s “Great Society” programs are welfare in one form or another (read socialism). Do you see any politicians on the horizon with the stones to get them repealed? I sure don’t. I live in this society as it is, not as I wish it was. BTW, my time at the Workforce Development agency was 2/3’s helping fellow veterans find work or start a business, and 1/3 teaching welfare moms how to look for work.
Dayum....glad that I’m not considered “on welfare”.
Come to think of it.....one of the lines on my paycheck was for UCI.
