Last Yugo sputters to end of the line
Columbus Dispatch & AP ^ | November 20, 2008 | Dusan Stojanovic

BELGRADE, Serbia -- Why does a Yugo have a defroster on the rear window?

To keep your hands warm while you push it.

That's just one of the "Yugo jokes" about the cheap and much-maligned subcompact that won notoriety for being one of the worst cars ever exported to the United States.

Today, the last Yugo, once the pride of communist Yugoslavia's automobile industry, will roll off its Serbian production line in Kragujevac.

It will be missed here -- but probably not in America.

Soon after it hit the U.S. markets in 1986, selling for the bargain-basement price of just $3,990, the boxy Yugo was derided by American car magazines "as barely qualifying as a car" and "an assembled bag of nuts and bolts."

I bought a Yugo in ‘86. It was actually fun to drive. We got rid of it shortly after the side mirror fell off when we shut the door.

I almost bought a Yugo, but my wife told me “Yugo straight to hell if you think I’m driving that”

It’s funny how car advertisements always talk about a car being exciting or thrilling to drive.

You want thrilling, try driving the NJ Turnpike at 80 mph in a 30-year-old Volkswagen Bug with suspect brakes. That’s thrilling! Exciting is barreling down a mountain like a bat out of hell in an out-of-control Renault R-4, so you will have enough momentum to get up the other side without shifting into first gear. Stimulating is a Volkswagen Campmobile Bus in a crosswind.

People just don’t know how to have fun!

These days, everyone's talking about the Hyundai, and the Yugo. Both nice cars, if you've got $3,000 or $4,000 to throw around. But, for those of us whose name doesn't happen to be Rockefeller, finally there's some good news - a car with a sticker price of $179. That's right, $179. The name of the car?

Adobe. The sassy new Mexican import that's made out of clay. German engineering and Mexican know-how helped create the first car to break the $200 barrier. At this price, you might not expect more than reliable transportation - but, brother, you get it! Extra features: like the custom contour seats, or the beverage-gripping dash. And the money you save isn't exactly small change!

I always said the most advantageous aspect of a Yugo was that when you got in a wreck you didn't have to purchase a coffin as you could just be buried in it.

My brother loved his yugo, the thing was good on gas and he got about eight to ten years off of it with only one major repair (tranmission). He bought the car for 4K, got 800 trade in and eight pretty cheap years..

If I could buy a new Yugo I would..

My buddy had one. Lasted about 7k miles before it started to have serious problems.
He loved it and he didn’t mind hitting small trees and driving it through corn fields.
