I need some positive reasons why not to plan for a SHTF scenario.

Posted on 11/16/2008 3:15:11 PM PST by rfmad

I am seriously thinking of taking to steps to go to a survivalist approach planning to survuve total chaos and financial and institutional break down. Some one please help me see why this is not going to happen. Thanks

“Most people wouldn’t know how to survive if they couldn’t stop at the grocery every night to buy their dinner, let alone how to cook it if there was no electricity.”

Very true. I'm used to no electricity while camping, I insist we all still do it once a year, even though a few of my kids don't like it. Came in handy during our October surprise storm here in NY. Had no power for 10 days and did just fine. Hubby still marvels that I didn't whine.
It's good to know I can do it. ;)

This is the first time I’ve ventured out there as well. I was just providing a link because another poster mentioned it.

Tell your doctor you’re going on a 2 month cruise or that you’re going to visit relatives in Russia, or something like that and ask for the meds.

"I was checking out hubbys collection of rifles today ( most all WW1 and WW2 weaponry) and decided they were a bit to much for me. Tomorrow I get my very own. He is buying me an AR15 for our anniversary.

Odd spot I find myself in to be happy/relieved about such an anniversary gift."

Recently got a Rock River Arms AR-15 and had fun with it yesterday. With an EOTek long scope on it I was able to hit a bulls-eye at 100 yards. I highly recommend the RRA. There's a website where you can buy plastic mags for it at a good price, that won't dent if dropped--I'd have to dig the site up. What a strange way to say "Happy Anniversary," huh, AirForceMom? :-/ These are strange times.

My dad always says "There's a shitstorm on the horizon."

I'll bet the "prophetic" web bots are going nuts right now. They've probably picked up a lot of frightening keys words since November.

If anyone knows anything about quanta here, they know what this means.

Yep, plan on buying more than a few extra magazines.
Hubby has some connections that we’ve met through doing gun shows, we’ll buy from them if possible ( if they all aren’t cleaned out of stock yet ) before hitting a gun shop.

I know people who have little to no food in their homes, they purchase as needed. I could never live that way.

I have always lived from 15 to 20 miles from the nearest store and you don’t just jump in the car and get something that you forgot. You learn to keep all the favorites on hand.

I have 3 full freezers and an overflowing pantry. One night my DIL and granddaugher came to my house to “shop”. They were too tired to stop at the grocery store and they knew I’d have everything they needed.

A suggestion if you live in a liberal city? Head for the rural areas.

I'm a staunch conservative living near Boston(I was born here).

Do you have any recommendations as to which state is best to relocate to?

Sure is an odd gift for me to be wanting. I am glad though that he was open to it.
I’m asking Santa for plenty of ammo too. I’ve been good. ;)

We've been working on off the grid living for years

Can you elaborate?

It’s important that we constitutionalists survive the collapse and pass on our knowledge and values to the coming generations, because the new country will have to be built on something.

I think we can be fairly sure that we will be the survivors. Liberals by nature look to abdicate their personal responsibility while conservatives are adamant about taking care of themselves.

I'm glad to see this discussion as it has been on my mind lately too. I already have turned a plot for a spring garden.

He just bought a used B&S generator. Small, noisy but will do the trick to stay warm. It will not be used for any other purpose (we can "rough" it.) We'll have to all move into one room at night. During the day, we have many woobies and other means to stay warm. That's the plan anyway.

One note to all, my husband ordered these really cool three wick candles that you can cook with. They are called nuwick.

I just hope to gawd I never have to use any of it.

Thank you.
A scope is a very good idea, I’ll bat my eyes ( or pout, whatever it takes) to get the extras that I’ll need. ;)

Good for you!

Make sure you rotate... although, from my experience, most canned foods will last far longer than the label says.

I opened a can of Hunts spag sauce that was 6 years old and it was totally fine. No bulge to the can, no leaks, I poured it into the pan and rinsed out the can and saw no internal corrosion.

They say the acid content of tomato products is so high it pretty much sterilizes it.

But I opened a jar of Miracle whip that was like two years old and it was gone. Certain prepared foods have some kind of oil in them that basically makes it smell like old paint after a while.

Exactly...and being prepared for potentially extended disruption of electrical services is just plain prudent living IMHO.
