World leaders dine in style as they discuss financial crisis (Bon Appetit, Peasants!)

(CNN) – The global economy may be undergoing a significant downturn, but the White House’s dinner budget still appears flush with cash.

After all, world leaders who are in town to discuss the economic crisis are set to dine in style Friday night while sipping wine listed at nearly $500 a bottle.

According to the White House, tonight’s dinner to kick off the G-20 summit includes such dishes as “Fruitwood-smoked Quail,” “Thyme-roasted Rack of Lamb,” and “Tomato, Fennel and Eggplant Fondue Chanterelle Jus.”

To wash it all down, world leaders will be served Shafer Cabernet “Hillside Select” 2003, a wine that sells at $499 on Wine.com.

The exceedingly pricey wine may seem a bit peculiar given leaders are in Washington to discuss a possible world financial meltdown, but Sally McDonough, a spokeswoman for Laura Bush, said it “was the most appropriate wine that we had in the White House wine cellar for such a gathering.

McDonough also said the White House purchased the wine at a “significantly lower price” than what it is listed at.

“Of course the White House gets its wine at wholesale prices,” she said. “Given the intimate size of the group, it was an appropriate time for The White House to use this stock.”

“I wonder what Michelle will do to the White House decor?”

If her couture is reflective of her taste.........yikes.

"Are you aware that the cake she was and you are referring to is not the birthday sort........aka let them eat poo kind of “cake”......:o)"

My mother, who was of french descent, used to make brioche. We would slather it in butter and eat it for breakfast with coffee. It was slightly sweet but I would still consider it in the bread family. I've never heard the interpretation of which you refer.

The carping about this makes me sick I expect it from the DBM but not here. Bush has had very few state dinners.

How is this dinner any different from all the previous dinners at the WH since the days of JFK?

The world's only superpower should serve what? Big Macs and chili dogs?
Common people wake up and get with it!

With Marie Antoinette’s comments “let them eat cake”. I have considered her interpretation to mean sewage sludge referred to at the time and sold to farmers as the kind of “cake” she meant. Accurate or not , my opinion only......:o)

Greens, mac and cheese, chicken and yams.

I’m sure world “leaders” will enjoy southern comfort food.

I look forward to seeing what’s on the Michelle Obama menu for heads of state.

You’re marinating coyotes? Do they taste good that way? I just use them for fertilizer.

What does that even mean? Lots of people like lamb (personally it’s my favorite), and it makes sense to have something everyone can eat when you invite a diverse crowd to a dinner.

I don't fault President Bush. But you have to admit, if there is a world wide depression upon us (as we are being told) this opens itself to criticism. Not only in our country, but others.

Like I said upthread, the cost of the campaigns and upcoming cost of the inaugration are out of line with the current economic crisis.

It's a state dinner with world leaders--what are they expected to eat? I'm just a student, and I get stuff like that all the time from law firms trying to recruit me.

And the $500 price tag they assign to the wine is retarded. I did a quick search and found it for $274.95, but I guess it makes the story more sensational to use the highest price you can find instead of the lowest.

This is still (until Jan 20th.) the seat of world power.

Would you have us act like some third world country?

More baiting of the classes. This is unbelievable. Maybe the White House should have served coney dogs.

Oh yeah, I recall the dozens and dozens of state dinners during the Clinton administration being described by CNN in this manner.

In fact, the Bush administration has given only a fraction of the number of state dinners that the Clintons gave.

Sickening to see people here falling for CNN’s class-warfare tactics, hook, line, and sinker.
