(CNN) The global economy may be undergoing a significant downturn, but the White Houses dinner budget still appears flush with cash.
After all, world leaders who are in town to discuss the economic crisis are set to dine in style Friday night while sipping wine listed at nearly $500 a bottle.
According to the White House, tonights dinner to kick off the G-20 summit includes such dishes as Fruitwood-smoked Quail, Thyme-roasted Rack of Lamb, and Tomato, Fennel and Eggplant Fondue Chanterelle Jus.
To wash it all down, world leaders will be served Shafer Cabernet Hillside Select 2003, a wine that sells at $499 on Wine.com.
The exceedingly pricey wine may seem a bit peculiar given leaders are in Washington to discuss a possible world financial meltdown, but Sally McDonough, a spokeswoman for Laura Bush, said it was the most appropriate wine that we had in the White House wine cellar for such a gathering.
McDonough also said the White House purchased the wine at a significantly lower price than what it is listed at.
Of course the White House gets its wine at wholesale prices, she said. Given the intimate size of the group, it was an appropriate time for The White House to use this stock.

Are you aware that the cake she was and you are referring to is not the birthday sort........aka let them eat poo kind of “cake”......:o)
No, but, same difference!
Seriously. I used to do that for a living.
You are eating better than the burrocraps, and paying a LOT less.

Only the finest for the overlord class. You peasents should stop complaining.
Went and culled coyotes off a ranch Friday for a well off friend aka rich ole fart ! Brought home about 150 pounds of Bonsmara Beef for my days efforts. 31 rounds of .223 later.
2 are marinating in the fridge now ......:o)
Even if they paid “wholesale” it’s still remarkably expensive.
The party for my neighbor's 81st birthday is tomorrow. Life is good when you can kill or pick your own food. (except squirrels. I am very tired of squirrel)
Being a chef, and having good, fresh product to work with... Priceless.

Once,, on a snowy night partying in my youth.. shots, happy holiday,, shots,, never again.. whewww. butane breath or what? do not smoke and drink it at same time. no no..
gives me the willys thinking about it..
diluted down , it could explain some politicos behaviour of late.. ;-)
No comment needed.
That, and knowing what was spent on campaigning and will be spent on the inauguration.
I thought there was a world wide recession?
I wonder what the Obamas were having for dinner.
something suitably modest I’m sure.
In the grand scheme of things, it's not really that expensive. That's not what they eat and drink all of the time. Once a year, I dine fine. Generally, I pick a restaurant that I've slaved in, or know the owner. I still spend all of my birthday money for one meal. Once a year.
The last time I deployed, I got a comp meal for me and a friend, and the owner (to my surprise) comped the matching wines as well. I got a rough idea of the total cost from the M'd and tipped accordingly. The meal was free. The matched wines were free. I tipped over $70 for me and the other TSgt.
The good stuff is pricy, but it's not for every day.
Oh my. Next time the guests must be served ramen noodles an tap water.
Make that the 0's.
OK, I think this is going too far. This is the WHITE HOUSE for heaven’s sake. The President was eating with other world leaders. It’s not like the White House hosts the G20 everyday. What did you want our White House to serve these world leaders? Spam sandwiches?
I say serve them "Hamburger Helper", without the hamburger.
I think that is most important.....quality of life. Some of the best meals I have had were either at 11,000 feet with a toss together menu of wild game and food brought or ad hoc recipes served up on a Iranian Dhow anchored 20 miles out in the Persian Gulf. All in the preparation of the materials at hand by the cook and the hunger of the diners. Cobra & Goat fajitas wrapped in steamed kale leaves with lemon juice and sea salt, fake skate scallops made with a piece of pipe cookie cutter, with corona and spiced butter and old bay spice.
Good eating .........enjoy that birthday party and stay safe !
Just wait until the Obama’s rule. It will be so ostentatious it will be sickening. I wonder what Michelle will do to the White House decor?
Oh good grief, it was a dinner party at the White House. Was Laura Bush supposed to send out for Big Macs and coke? Have we become so petty that we’re begruding the first family and their guests good food and whine now? Disgusting.
