COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - A South Carolina Roman Catholic priest has told his parishioners that they should refrain from receiving Holy Communion if they voted for Barack Obama because the Democratic president-elect supports abortion, and supporting him "constitutes material cooperation with intrinsic evil."
The Rev. Jay Scott Newman said in a letter distributed to parishioners at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Greenville that they are putting their souls at risk if they take Holy Communion before doing penance for their vote.
"Our nation has chosen for its chief executive the most radical pro-abortion politician ever to serve in the United States Senate or to run for president," Newman wrote, referring to Obama by his full name, including his middle name of Hussein.
"Voting for a pro-abortion politician when a plausible pro-life alternative exits constitutes material cooperation with intrinsic evil, and those Catholics who do so place themselves outside of the full communion of Christ's Church and under the judgment of divine law. Persons in this condition should not receive Holy Communion until and unless they are reconciled to God in the Sacrament of Penance, lest they eat and drink their own condemnation."
During the 2008 campaign, many bishops spoke out on abortion more boldly than four years earlier, telling Catholic politicians and voters that the issue should be the most important consideration in setting policy and deciding which candidate to back. A few church leaders said parishioners risked their immortal soul by voting for candidates who support abortion rights.
But bishops differ on whether Catholic lawmakersand votersshould refrain from receiving Communion if they diverge from church teaching on abortion. Each bishop sets policy in his own diocese. In their annual fall meeting, the nation's Catholic bishops vowed Tuesday to forcefully confront the Obama administration over its support for abortion rights.

I suspect he knows that, and is prepared.
It is so good to see this taking place. We have too many in our parish that discard abortion as an issue.
Case in point... A few weeks ago our priest read a letter from our bishop saying that Catholics should vote pro-life. (Our daughter was confirmed the night before, so I didn't see the reaction the following morning.) One woman stormed out, screeching she had heard enough!!! Three other couples cornered our priest after Mass and read him the riot act.
How do they do that after receiving the Eucharist? How have their hearts become so hardened?!
Are you Catholic? Pope B16 has ushered in a new Springtime, and he knows that the Church may become smaller. Will this pastor be dragged down? Perhaps. I hope not.
But, he is one of a new breed of orthodox priests who believe ‘be not afraid’.
In my parents' parish, a woman cornered the priest and questioned him on why he DIDN'T speak out on voting pro-life. I guess it all depends.
The only thing that should go into your stupid file is your comment. You think voters shouldn't research the person they are voting for to find out what he stands for? You think Catholics and other Christians should just disregard their religion when voting for someone? Now that is stupid thinking. Catholics and other Christians who believe in their faith had no business in voting for this killer of unborn and botched abortion babies.
Next you will be saying that we should all just vote for what some idiot tells us instead of finding out what they really think and intend to do, we should just vote for them for a "vaiety of reasons" and forget what evil they intend to do. Real Christians can not separate their beliefs from their vote, if they do they are no longer Christians but heedless, mindless drones.
Forgive me: But the "Church" has lately become a lot like Islam in some respects, i.e. turning its back on the modern world.
He won't be replaced, and nothing will happen to him as far as discipline from his superiors is concerned.
What do you think the pastor should do? Break the Obama voters on the wheel in the rectory basement, then hold an auto-da-fe in the school parking lot and burn them?
Come on, the maximum discipline possible to a Catholic layperson is to deny them the sacraments. That's just what this pastor did.
If their faith is important to them, they'll understand that it's time to repent. And if it isn't, well, then the Episcopal church down the block can have some new faces on Sunday. With the way the ECUSA is losing members, they'll probably be grateful.
He should also stress the necessity of making a good Confession as the means for readmittance to Communion.
The pennance might include signing an Impeachment petition.
They don’t. Examine your conscience. If you voted for Obama you have gone against Catholic teachings most greviously. As a result, you are no longer in a state of grace and must therefore not receive the Holy Eucharist.
Conservatives are always welcome in South Carolina. You’ll find a warm welcome here.
Thank you for the link, that is what I was looking for. He is going to need some support. If more would start speaking out it would be wonderful.
So are you the Bishop to say he won’t be replaced? I doubt it.
This priest may soon find himself elected a Bishop! Pope Benedict is watching!
