Hitler designed the Volkswagen? Or is that just an urban legend?

Hitler commissioned Dr. Ferdinand Porsche Sr to produce a "people's car" much like Henry Ford's "Model T", specifying that the car was to be affordable by the average working man. Dr. Porsche and a team of engineers (including his son Ferry Porsche) fulfilled that commission, working together to fulfill Germany's National Socialist requirements. They met Adolf Hitler at many business events but Hitler was not involved with the actual design of the automobile.

OK, so this thread has been up for almost an hour.

Nothing found on Google News search either.

Need a link, please....

Problem is that the unions gained a stranglehold on the US automakers when they were operating as an oligopoly. When foreign competition came in the '70s they were hurt but not mortally wounded. The 80s and 90s saw the unions gain more power while the big 3 feasted on the demands of high margin SUVs fueled, no pun intended, by cheap gas prices.

Now it's time to pay up. Demand for SUVs and other big cars has crashed due to the recent $4/gallon gas prices (strike 1), credit markets are tight (strike 2) and people are not making durable goods purchases because of the pessimistic outlook on the economy (strike 3, you're out).

The other problem is a Toyota or Honda will cost you 1000s less than a comparable US car, yet it gets better gas mileage, and can often go over 150,000 miles on one engine.

Pictures of Hitler riding in the Kampfwagen show he was not real impressed with the People’s Car. For one thing it wasn’t close to being capable of 100 mph. For another, it looked like a beady-eyed bug. But, it was superior to the US Greencar, which will have its radio welded to a station that plays Algore’s dire tipping point emergency speeches 24/7.

Thank you.

As I read that link I see where Bawney is all for adding billions more to the $25 Billion bailout the Big Three already received.

And anybody with a brain knows that that will lead to Nationalizing any industry. Be it mortgage, financial or the auto industry.

But I ain’t reading (yet) that BF is flat out calling for Nationalizing the auto industry (yet).

Our new liberal gov’t doesn’t have much choice but to nationalize the automakers. If they just give them money, that won’t change their business model and they’ll continue to fail. If they let them fail, they have to crap on the unions who they owe gretly.

This ain’t about saving the car companies........ it’s about propping up the unions.

The headline at the link says it all as far as I am concerned. That’s nationalizing.
