Michael Medved: GOP Comeback? Been There, Done That
townhall.com ^ | November 12, 2008 | Michael Medved

Pouring over the numbers in the Presidential and Congressional elections of 2008, there’s an eerie parallel that deserves far more attention than it’s received.

In races for the House, the Senate and the Presidency, the final totals match almost precisely with the results of the last Democratic sweep in 1992.

That election gave the Democrats 57 Senate seats to 43 for the Republicans. So far, with three races yet to be decided in 2008, Democrats (and the two independents who caucus with the Democrats) control 57 seats and the Republicans control 40. Assuming that the GOP’s Norm Coleman hangs on to win his seat after a recount in Minnesota, that Saxby Chambliss wins his run-off election in Georgia, and that Ted Stevens (or a GOP replacement) secures the seat in Alaska, the Senate lineup will match exactly with its contours in 1992—57 to 43. Even if the Republicans lose one of the undecided seats, it’s possible that Independent Joe Lieberman will decide (or find himself forced) to caucus with them, still giving them the same 43 seats they won in ’92.

On the House side, the resemblance is similarly close to the line-up sixteen years ago. After the Clinton landslide (beating President George H. W. Bush and eccentric “Reform Party” contender H. Ross Perot), the Democrats nabbed 258 seats in the House and the GOP controlled 176. At this point in 2008, the Dems have secured 255 seats and the Republicans 174, with six seats unsettled. The most likely outcome of the races yet to be decided would be an exact replica of the House of Representatives that convened in 1993.

"Just two years after the electoral disaster of ’92, the GOP came roaring back to capture both houses of Congress in the “Contract with America”/Newt Gingrich revolution. And six years after that epic triumph, Republicans recaptured the White House under George W. Bush in the impossibly close election of 2000.

The problem this time around is that a lot of "experts" (on both sides of the aisle) are working overtime to convince the GOP that the only way back into power is to slide further to the Left and give up on needlessly divisive issues like religion, abortion, and homosexuality.

That's a recipe for eternal irrelevance.

It’s tragic for America, our freedom, our security, and our children’s future that the GOP threw away their majority by being stupid. The American disgrace is that there are no gonads among our Party. If they had spine, guts, and gonads, the illegal campaign contributions and voter fraud in DC would be investigated and prosecuted NOW as we expose the Marxist currently flocking into DC.

I don’t think there will be a come back without a true Christian revival. Without a D.L. Moody or Keswick type of revival this country is finished and it is the end times for sure. A majority of Americans have lost their moral and spiritual compass.

Exactly. But they better establish that fascist state quickly, because the loser dems won't have George W. Bush to run against in 2010. All they'll have is their Dictator-King Obama and his smooth-talking ways to convince voters that more socialism is the cure to all our ills. Perhaps I shouldn't be so doubtful that they can do it, considering that more than half the electorate is completely brain-dead.

I agree. I’m not sure that politics really matters any more. Spreading the Word of God is what is needed. Eventually, the political matters will work themselves out. But without a new Christian revival, I don’t think there is anything we can hope for.

This has always been the case. Go back and check Reagan’s speeches from the 70’s.

Read this speech and tell me it doesn’t apply now just as it did then:

“The demographics of this country have changed dramatically since 1992”

I’d say they haven’t. The white population in 1990 was about 80% and black was about 12%.

http://www.census.gov/population/www/documentation/twps0056/tab01.pdf

As of 2008, the black population has increased only slightly, but whites still remain very close to 80% of the population. Granted, there are more Hispanics bundled with whites in the new numbers, but I submit that the Hispanic vote is a swing vote.

I’d say they haven’t. The white population in 1990 was about 80% and black was about 12%.

Bureau of the Census: An Older and More Diverse Nation by Midcentury

"Minorities, now roughly one-third of the U.S. population, are expected to become the majority in 2042, with the nation projected to be 54 percent minority in 2050. By 2023, minorities will comprise more than half of all children.

In 2030, when all of the baby boomers will be 65 and older, nearly one in five U.S. residents is expected to be 65 and older. This age group is projected to increase to 88.5 million in 2050, more than doubling the number in 2008 (38.7 million).

Similarly, the 85 and older population is expected to more than triple, from 5.4 million to 19 million between 2008 and 2050.

By 2050, the minority population — everyone except for non-Hispanic, single-race whites — is projected to be 235.7 million out of a total U.S. population of 439 million. The nation is projected to reach the 400 million population milestone in 2039.

The non-Hispanic, single-race white population is projected to be only slightly larger in 2050 (203.3 million) than in 2008 (199.8 million). In fact, this group is projected to lose population in the 2030s and 2040s and comprise 46 percent of the total population in 2050, down from 66 percent in 2008.

Meanwhile, the Hispanic population is projected to nearly triple, from 46.7 million to 132.8 million during the 2008-2050 period. Its share of the nation’s total population is projected to double, from 15 percent to 30 percent. Thus, nearly one in three U.S. residents would be Hispanic."

In 2050, the nation’s population of children is expected to be 62 percent minority, up from 44 percent today. Thirty-nine percent are projected to be Hispanic (up from 22 percent in 2008), and 38 percent are projected to be single-race, non-Hispanic white (down from 56 percent in 2008).

As of 2008, the black population has increased only slightly, but whites still remain very close to 80% of the population. Granted, there are more Hispanics bundled with whites in the new numbers, but I submit that the Hispanic vote is a swing vote.

Hispanics vote overwhelming for the Dems. The same holds true for immigrants who are the main factor driving population growth that will add another 162 million to our population by 2060. 87% of the 1.2 million LEGAL immigrants who enter this country each year are minorities. And almost all of the 500,000 to 1 million who enter illegally are minorities. Since 1970, we have added 100 million to our population, with about 75% due to immigration.

Immigrants account for one in eight U.S. residents, the highest level in 80 years. In 1970 it was one in 21; in 1980 it was one in 16; and in 1990 it was one in 13. In a decade, it will be one in 7, the highest in our history and by 2050, it will be one in 5. Immigrants vote Dem as do minorities.

The largest increases in immigrants were in California, Florida, Texas, New Jersey, Illinois, Arizona, Virginia, Maryland, Washington, Georgia, North Carolina, and Pennsylvania. Watch for these states to start turning purple or a deeper shade of blue. Demography is destiny.

If you want to see what the US will look like in 2050, take a gander at California today where one in three residents is Hispanic and one in four is foreign-born. Non-Hispanic whites are less than 50%. CA will not go Rep in a Presidential race for generations to come.
