WASHINGTON (CNN) -- For most African-Americans, the election of Barack Obama as president was a dream come true that they didn't think they would see in their lifetime, a national poll released Tuesday suggests.
Eighty percent of African-Americans questioned in a CNN/Opinion Research Corp. survey said that Obama's election was a dream come true, and 71 percent said they never thought a black candidate for president would get elected in their lifetime.
...
The poll also suggests a racial divide among people who thought a black candidate would be elected president in their lifetimes. Fifty-nine percent of white respondents said they thought a black president would be elected in their lifetime, but only 29 percent of black respondents agreed.
"Polls show that whites and blacks tend to have different views on the amount of racism in the U.S." said CNN Polling Director Keating Holland. "So it's not surprising that they would have different views on the likelihood of an African-American president."
The survey suggests that Obama's victory may have some affect on race relations in this country.
"A majority of blacks now believe that a solution to the country's racial problems will eventually be found," Holland said. "In every previous poll on this topic dating back to 1993, black respondents had always said that racial problems were a permanent part of the American landscape."
"Even in polls taken earlier this year, a majority of African-Americans said that a solution to the country's racial problems would never be found; now blacks and whites agree that racial tensions may end."

There’s obviously a big disconnect between black people and white people on how “racist” our country is. White people, interestingly enough, are not particularly surprised to see a black guy elected President.
Whatever else may come out of this election, the fact that a lot of black people now suddenly seem to “get” that we need not have a major problem with racism is good news.
This “dream come true” is going to become a nightmare for the country if he governs from the Left.
And then it will be morning in America again for the Right.
I never realized how black people identify so strongly with their own race.
It’s really silly for them to celebrate Obama when he’s only 3% african. The other 47% is Arab. And it is Arabs who have enslaved africans and continue to do so today.
Ironic.
Obama’s election was a solution in search of a problem. Race relations will only get worse when obama screws up.
Well, you certainly can’t accuse them of being intelligent...

Mark my word, there are going to be a lot of frustrated 0Bama voters in general and African-Americans in particular when after 4 years they will not have advanced much by handouts from the 0Bama administration.
ping
Agree 100%
Who is "them"?
“it will be morning in America again for the Right”
This could be a real dream which will never become reallity since US democracy seems to fade away with such “elections” where the laws are broken, free and fair debates inexisting, justice paralysed(no effective investigations)
Their “dreams” appear to be rather poor!
It would mean that they were dreaming of a black president FOR the blacks??!!?
If Obama screws up as badly as he probably will, race relations will worsen, as people impute his failures to his race.

Yes, and just wait till they get their draft notices and all their children are required to do “community service”, a euphemism for extracurricular marxist indoctrination, in order to graduate high school or matriculate into a college.
Great analysis.
This is not surprising. white Americans are told that
blacks are entitled to eternal victimhood. He is the affirmative action president.
I’m sure Obama never be held responsible for the blunders of his administration. white guilt.
It will still be Bush’s fault.
In a related note, 90% of Communist never thought they would see a Red president in their lifetimes.
One thing about this election though, we obviously don't need affirmative action or set-asides anymore. All such measures should be stopped immediately.
“I never realized how black people identify so strongly with their own race.”
Try that if you’re white.
You’ll get an FBI file for your trouble.
And, they have not figured in that the old white folks my choose to make no money and pay no taxes to fund their huppla.
