Prop. 8 opponents blame ads

SAN FRANCISCO - California's gay-rights movement has been beset by infighting and finger-pointing since the defeat of gay marriage at the ballot box, with some activists questioning the campaign's mild tactics, including the decision not to show same-sex couples in ads.

The movement's leaders "were very timid. They were too soft," said Robin Tyler, a lesbian comic who created a series of celebrity public service announcements with the slogan "Stop the Hate, No on 8" that were rejected because they were deemed too negative. "We were lightweights on our side."

Proposition 8, a measure to stop gay marriage in California, passed with 52 percent of the vote last week in a painful defeat for gay rights activists. The ban overrode a California Supreme Court ruling last spring that allowed 18,000 same-sex couples to tie the knot over the past four months.

Some gays are complaining that their leaders failed to organize a visible and vigorous defense of same-sex marriage. In particular, they say the movement failed to counter a series of hard-hitting ads warning that the ban on gay marriage was needed to prevent children from learning about gay relationships in school.

Leaders of the campaign in favor of gay marriage say they made a strategic decision not to highlight gay newlyweds or same-sex couples with children in their ads for fear of alienating undecided heterosexual voters.

The movement's first commercial, aired in late September, starred a couple with an adult lesbian daughter. Later ads included a fictional woman with a lesbian niece, California's public schools chief and Sen. Dianne Feinstein saying, "No matter how you feel about marriage, vote against discrimination."

But won't The One cancel DOMA and DADT with a stroke of the pen? What's the worry?

Funny, no mention of the horrific "missionary" anti-Mormon ad in this AP article. Just an oversight, I'm sure.

“Some gays are complaining that their leaders failed to organize a visible and vigorous defense of same-sex marriage.”

hmmmm....maybe that’s because there IS NO defense for same sex ‘marriage’.

Oh right, that’s it. Lets blame the adds. Did it ever occur to these idiots that the majority of people, no matter what their faith is believe that their life style is not only dangerous but just plain WRONG!!!!!

Did it ever occur to the homosexuals that people might finally be tired of having their sexual life style choice shoved down our throats? Or do they realize that we are tired of being called hate mongers and intolerant because we don’t want their sinful values forced upon our children in public schools?

No, of course not. It must be the ads.

This was one, if not the only, brightspot of this election.
The Mormons, Catholics, Protestants, etc. teamed up and defeated Hollywood.

It was the ads. The ads that ran here non stop that compared the Gay civil right struggle to the Black civil right stuggle really pissed off the African American community here. (not picking a side, just telling what happened around the water cooler)

Hmmm, take away the gay subject matter and it sounds like the campaign McCain ran. sarc/off

How about this for a defense of same sex marriage. I am sure this would have put them over the top. Yeah, I could see a TV commercial in CA just like this

I have also heard that as well. And the best part is that they cannot go after or blame the African Americans because the black lash would do too much damage to their cause.

Along with vast numbers of non-churchgoing Blacks and Latinos. You know--the ones who voted for 0bama.

I agree. I work with a gay man who cannot understand how I can like him without supporting his life style.

We have had many heated discussions and I asked him what it would take for homosexuals to feel equal to heterosexuals because they have the same rights as I do.

He said that was not enough and that the gays would never feel equal until every living person believed that being a homosexual was normal and no one would believe it was a sin.

Only then would gays no longer feel oppressed, depressed and guilty for having sex with someone of the same gender.

I told him that if he believed he was born this way felt there was nothing wrong with his sexual behavior then why does it matter to him if I did not agree with his lifestyle.

His answer: Christian beliefs hold him back from having a monogamous relationship because our beliefs make him think what he is doing is wrong, which in turn makes him unable to be faithful to one person.

Yep. Sounds logical to me

"No matter how you feel about marriage, vote against discrimination."

Sounds good to me. So when I don't get the job as starting goalie for the Anaheim Ducks based on my age, limited athletic ability, total lack of on-ice hockey skills/experience and so forth, I should be able to sue somebody. Because discrimination is just wrong, right?

Well, in my south Bay neighborhood — there was a flaming fagot in his midriff bare shirt and “Do rag” riding a bicycle through and warning folks that had Yes on 8 signs in their yard....

Squeaking out “I know where you live, you don't know where I live — not very smart of you”....

On his third or forth pass through the neighborhood — he was “confronted”.... There was a nearly 70 year old, big, broad and bald former Marine explaining in Marine Corps jargon what awaited “trouble makers” in this neighborhood....

"Unintentionally", he took it personal. It was disgusting.... I thought the prissy little bitch was going to cry.... I'd never before seen an adult “male” hyperventilate..

Do over!! (We weren’t ready)

Can we take a mulligan on that one?

If we knew you were going to run ads stating the facts we would have cranked out some attack ads, after all the Mormons can’t get marriage right either.

/sarc

I love these stories that include the excuses for the reasons they lost. Funny how the reasons are never that the majority don’t agree with them. It’s always that the voters were not smart enough to vote for them. Were all too damn stupid to understand.

A moral case can't be made for same sex marriage. Its not really marriage since such a union is for all intents and purposes sterile. And a child needs a father and a mother. Two same sex parents can never teach a child how to interact with the opposite sex. Marriage is about the children when all is said and done.

The discrimination argument did not get very far, because most people, growing up believing that marriage is between one man and one woman, never felt that their belief is discriminatory or hateful. The only people who would buy that argument are those who already support same-sex "marriage" and those who already hate homosexuals.
