Auto Industry Support

Posted on 11/11/2008 12:52:30 PM PST by Always Independent

Why isn't GW and the rest of the republicans slamming the democrats for wanting to provide so much money to help the auto industry when they did so much to harm it in the first place. With the democrats preventing the domestic production of oil and aiding the cartel in keeping the price of oil so high, they are the prime reason the US automakers aren't selling cars and trucks. Doesn't the new axis of evil Reid/Pelosi/Obama know that the high price of fuel is the primary reason that cars and trucks aren't being sold.

I guess they should be called the Axle of evil.

Dammit GW and the rest fight for something!

"Why isn't GW and the rest of the republicans slamming the democrats...

Because the sole purpose of the Republican Party is to provide an ineffective alternative to the Democrat Party.

You actually believe that either one has the best interests of the country and society as a foundational principle?

BWA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA!

sucks to be them

It does.

I wish them all the best looking for repentance in this market. I think they truly want to follow the straight and narrow.

Imagine, for a moment, a loss of 3 million well Over-paid jobs.

The new owners would make adjustments.

It seem that Jorge is more interested in depressing wages in this country and bring in imports.

More than likely....GWB seems to like Mexico, Commie China, more than America. His economics are killing the country...and make it hard for real conservatives to challenge the Dems on their schemes

Unfortunately GWB is just as much a wealth redistributor as the Dems

HAHAHAHA! You gotta be kidding me.

Bush, via the Paulson Bailout, is the Socialist.

Think about it, we now have essentially NATIONALIZED the Housing, Insurance, Commercial and Investment Banking Industries, not to mention Bush’s bailouts for not only Hollywood, but Detroit as well.

He’s not leaving anything for Barack to nationalize!

Good point, it's DANG sure not. For much of the 70's and well into the 80's Texas had many (and I mean MANY) people from Michigan here, getting jobs in the earl bidness, because Detroit was letting them go.

They never liked how we did things here. It was TOO commont to hear people say "That's not how we did it in Michigan." Native Texans rolled their eyes, and didn't change anything.

All the native Michiganders left and most went back home, in the mid-80's. Our economy has boomed ever since.

Sounds to me like Michigan is about to be the new Oklahoma, and the Obama economy is about to be the new Dust Bowl. C'mon down, the jobs are fine.

Let Detroit become a sweltering unflushed toilet on a hot summer day - the people who live there would probably like it.

What makes you think auto workers live in Detroit? For that matter, what makes you think there are auto plants in Detroit? Not too many of either there any more.

The majority of auto workers live in the suburbs of areas where there are auto plants, or farther out than that, driving 45 min. to 2 hours to get to work.

It might be better to let the retirees and laid off workers receive some sort of unemployment from their own states, rather than the Federal Government. Problem is those states are already in trouble.

"Cause - and Effect"

This is one concept that continually escapes liberals altogether (and far too many Republicans as well).

Agreed, Obama’s presidency should be as “untroubled” as Bush’s was.

Should We Really Bail Out $73.20 Per Hour Labor?

The chart above shows average hourly compensation (additional data source here) for the Big Three ($73.20) and Toyota ($48.00), compared to average hourly compensation for Management and Professional Workers ($47.57), Manufacturing/Goods Producing ($31.59) and all workers ($28.48), data available here.

Should U.S. taxpayers really be providing billions of dollars to bailout companies (GM, Ford and Chrysler) that compensate their workers 52.5% more than the market (assuming Toyota wages and benefits are market), 54% more than management and professional workers, 132% more than the average manufacturing wage, and 157% more than the average compensation of all American workers?

Maybe the country would be better off in the long run if we let the Big Three fail, and in the process break the UAW labor monopoly, and then let Toyota, Honda and Volkswagen take over the U.S. auto industry, and restore realistic, competitive, market wages to the industry. It might be the best long-run solution.

Sadly, the American autoworkers are so corrupt that they should all be put out of business and the government should send a bill for $75,000 to each and every union autoworker so they could pay back what they have stolen.

When did we lose our integrity?

Why isn’t anyone talking to the Insurance companies about cutting health care costs? Have employees pay 50% of their health care instead of the car companies picking it all up. Cut union dues and relax some of the restrictions on the companies. Without features like these, why should our people bail them out? Especially when a guy putting bumper on a car is making $60K.

A disaster for the Obama administration?

Failing to see how this would be worse than what’s coming already...

Also, I really doubt that 3 million people would be out of work. The combined employees of the Big Three in the US are less than 1 million, and most of the suppliers are no longer solely dependent on the Dying Three for income - they’re now supplying Honda, Toyota, Hyundai and BMW, etc. They saw the writing on the wall years ago.

Actually most of the suppliers are in Mexico and China.

Our company was a GM supplier for 29 years....but the way they have been doing business since the late 90s, nothing surprises me anymore.

In fact, they still owe us 30 grand or so from ten years ago. Never paid it.

In hindsight, losing the GM business was the best thing that ever happened to our company....as we were able to reduce size and focus on a primary area of specialty.

Rising healthcare costs are largely not the insurance industry’s fault, but the lawyers’ instead. Frivolous lawsuits and lawsuit lotto, plus the inability to deny care to illegals is why healthcare costs so much.
