[Electing Obama] A Grave Mistake and an Abiding Hope

A Grave Mistake and an Abiding Hope

November 6th, 2008 by Fr. Frank Pavone

Americans have made a grave mistake in electing Barack Obama to the presidency. Yet America herself remains great and is not a mistake, which is why so many of her citizens will continue, with even greater energy and determination, to defend her founding principles.

The man elected to the Presidency said during the campaign that he does not know when a human being starts to have human rights. How can one govern from that starting point of ignorance? Governing is about protecting human rights; to do it successfully, you have to know where they come from, and when they begin.

The President-elect has already failed that test miserably.

The American people do not share Barack Obama’s extreme and offensive views on abortion. They never have and they never will. The coming four years will see a widening gap between the people and their President on this fundamental issue. As Americans come to know how extreme his position is, the intensity of the struggle to protect these children will only increase.

The pro-life movement has made significant gains in the courts and in the law in these last eight years. For the next four, the movement will work to prevent the erosion of that progress.

It would be a serious mistake for people to think that this election means the pro-life movement has no political power. All politics is local. Political power is about people. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was once told that given the political realities, civil rights legislation would be impossible to pass. “We’ll just have to see about that,” he replied. And the civil rights movement was born, stirring the hearts of the people to lead the nation to the victory of justice.

So it is with our movement. The vast majority of Americans are pro-life. They will fight abortion on the local level, opening pregnancy centers and closing abortion mills, activating their Churches and educating their children, proclaiming the message in the media and demonstrating in the streets. The pro-life movement is winning this battle in the hearts and minds of the American people, as opinion polls show and as the shrinking number of abortion mills and abortion providers prove.

Political races are always a swinging of the pendulum. As soon as you win, you begin to lose, and as soon as you lose, you begin the ascent again to winning. In the next two election cycles (2010 and 2012) the pro-life movement will make up for political ground lost in this one.

It is all right to be disappointed at the end of an election season, but one must never walk away. Amidst disappointment is abiding hope in America, where everything remains possible, and where a new chapter of the pro-life movement has just begun. The efforts that were made, and the sacrifices endured in this election season made a difference, and we will build on that difference to see another day when the work and the ballots of pro-life people will dismantle the Culture of Death. We will keep marching toward that pro-life America we seek, and won’t stop until we get there.

I’m convinced Obama’s election was about some white people assuaging their guilt for the institution of slavery.

I think that was part of it, but I also think there was a whole group of people who voted for him thinking that if a black man was elected to President the country would finally put the whole racism thing behind them. After hearing "your racist" for every argument against Bozo for 2 years people grew weary and naively thought it would end when he was elected. Alas, instead of taking the wind out of the sails of racism charges it will make things worse because Bozo isn't a fair man, he is a liar and a cheat, he used fraud to help win the election, he lies about all things.

The MSM will merely spin things a little differently and still use the race card constantly.

I do feel that the blacks will turn on him shortly, as soon as it is evident they can't break the law with impunity and that they will not be getting rich off of other people's money. Bozo has already started the "please lower your expectations, I may have exaggerated a trifle during the campaign" mantra and the feces will hit the rotating device soon after he takes power.

Your friend’s anger could also be her guilty conscience trying to get her attention.

I’m just playing amateur psychologist here, but I know what you mean. I have some family members who were big Obama supporters, and they don’t seem very happy right now. Sore winners, if you will.

But you cannot blame just Catholics?

What about all the evangelicals who voted for him?

The Protestants who voted for him?

The Jews who voted for him?

Over 100 Bishops Have Spoken Out on Priority of Life Issues
Posted on October 28, 2008, 11:59 AM | Deal W. Hudson
The list of U. S. bishops who have spoken out on the priority of the life issues in this election is now over 100. The list now contains 70 individual bishops and three joint statements.
I would like to continue updating this list until the day of the election. I have tried to incorporate all the comments thus far. If I dd not get them all, I apologize. (For a few of the suggestions, I could not find a suitable link.)
Please continue using the comments section to let us know what bishop is not on this list who should be. This would include any bishop who has individually, or jointly, published a statement about this election pointing out the primacy of the life issues.

Thanks for this additional info. I wasn’t aware that doctors were shying away from abortion. It really is a very good sign.

Maybe, just maybe, they searched their souls! (Instead of looking at their wallets.)

Defund Planned Parenthood!

I think we will see a lot of people in that category, especially with FOCA on the tables of Congress.

We need a separation of Church and State.

How is that going to help? It's so many people NOT voting their faith that is the problem already.

The problem is, half of Americans think killing babies is just peachy.

It's because they can't bring themselves to admit that it IS a baby. And they don't WANT to believe it either. That would make them guilty, and it's no fun being guilty.

Because we will be easy targets for the left in the MSM. They will depict anyone with faith as being a naive fool. I couldn't disagree more with them but we must recognize their influence. Look at the vicious attacks on Palin. Let's keep the faith. Let's practice our religion but not make such a big show of it for political events. This is cannon fodder for the MSM.

It is more than a little frustrating to say the least. I don't understand their mindset at all!

Here in MA, there are WAY too many Catholics who are still blindly voting Democrat. They have hung on to the notion, nurtured by their parents, that the Democrats are for the 'little people', and the Republicans are the 'party of the rich'.

Lately, another undercurrent is the rejection of the 'right wing religious' voters in the Republican party. Many Northeastern Catholics don't like the idea of bringing religion into politics. They've absorbed the notion that in public discourse, it's tacky to talk religion.
