2008 Election Updates
Sportsmen's and Animal Owners' Voting Alliance (SAOVA) ^ | 11-1-2008 | Susan Wolf

A SAOVA message to sportsmen, pet owners and farmers concerned about protecting their traditions, avocations and livelihoods from anti-hunting, anti-breeding, animal guardianship advocates. Forwarding and cross posting, with attribution, encouraged.

2008 Election Updates

11/01/08

Dear Friends,

I am writing again to remind everyone of what is at stake in this election - the very real possibility of a 60 seat, filibuster-proof Democratic majority in the Senate. Supported by left-wing congressmen, HSUS and other activists will have a field day passing anti-hunter and pet “protection” legislation. Without moderate balance in the Senate it will be difficult, if not impossible, to stop radical animal rightist legislation from becoming law.

Below are key races that decide who will control the Senate. The outcome is in your hands.

Colorado

Republican Bob Schaeffer, a conservative former congressman, is trailing Rep. Mark Udall by double digits. Udall is more liberal than other Democrats elected to statewide office. Schaeffer has a solid voting record supporting your interests.

Georgia

Incumbent Sen. Saxby Chambliss, a staunch conservative and important ally for sportsmen, animal owners, and the animal agriculture industry is in a race that may go down to the wire against relatively unknown Democrat Jim Martin. Chambliss blocked HSUS's 2005 anti-dog breeder, anti-hunting dog PAWS bill from becoming law.

Minnesota

Incumbent Norm Coleman is SAOVA endorsed with a voting record that has demonstrated his awareness regarding the difference between animal rightist and animal welfare legislation. Moronic comedian, Democrat Al Franken has a narrow lead on Republican incumbent Norm Coleman; however a number of polled voters remain undecided.

Mississippi

Originally listed in the top 10 seats likely to switch, Republican Sen. Roger Wicker is holding a comfortable lead over Democratic challenger, former Gov. Ronnie Musgrove. While a member of the House, Wicker consistently voted on the side of sportsmen and animal owners. SAOVA Mississippi voters need to support him.

New Hampshire

The most endangered incumbent is New Hampshire's John Sununu. An avid hunter and fisherman, Sununu is in tune with the needs of the sporting community, as well as with animal owners. Jeanne Shaheen is weak on our issues, refused to respond to SAOVA's issues questionnaire and repeatedly increased state taxes and fees.

New Mexico

Republican nominee Steve Pearce is trailing Rep. Tom Udall by double digits. Udall is supported by radical Humane Society Legislative Fund. There's no clearer difference in two opposing candidates voting records this election.

North Carolina

Most recent polls have Democrat Kay Hagan in the lead but only by 2 points. A recently released poll by NRSC cited Sen. Dole in the lead by 4 points. Sen. Dole has supported HSUS legislation in the past. State Senator Kay Hagan had an opportunity to express her views on animal rights and hunting issues but refused to answer SAOVA’s candidate questionnaire.

Oregon

Recent polls give State House Speaker Jeff Merkley a small lead over incumbent Gordon Smith. Merkley is supported by the Humane USA PAC.

Virginia

Democrat Mark Warner, a moderate former governor, is running more than 20 points ahead of Republican Jim Gilmore. A definite win for the Democrats on the seat vacated by retiring Republican Senator John Warner.

ACTIVISTS TARGET HOUSE INCUMBENTS

The Humane Society Legislative Fund (HSLF) filed reports this week for almost $400,000 in advertising expenditures directly against Incumbent Joe Knollenberg (R, MI9). Knollenberg’s challenger, Democrat Gary Peters, is supported by HSLF and the Sierra Club.

Incumbent Marilyn Musgrave (R, CO4) has been targeted by leftist Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund who have spent in excess of $200,000 on TV ads against her.

SAVOA UPDATED WEBSITE

A special 2008 election section has been added to the SAOVA website: http://www.saova.org/2008election.html with additional analysis, a list of 27 SAOVA-HSUS head-to-head races, and a must read letter from Senator Obama addressing HSUS initiatives and especially the PUPS bill.

VOTE ON NOVEMBER 4th

The world not only belongs to those who show up, it's controlled by the best informed and most motivated. The stakes are high and the effects of this election will be felt for generations.

Please cross post this message widely.

SAOVA remains, as always, in the forefront to protect your interests.

I am the president of our local Humane Society. I would love to see a bill to stop back yard breeders, this is a rampant practice in Ohio and Pennsylvania, especially among the Amish. I am tired of having an agent that has to clean up the messes these people create.
On the other hand I was very unhappy when the HSUS sent out an email a month or so ago telling us to vote for Obama! They got a nasty response from me.

Dear Ohio Granny,
No legislation is going to stop the people who do things wrong...they will just go underground, move, and continue to work the system as usual. Unfortunatley only we LAW-ABIDING, CONCIENTIOUS people will lose. Purebred dog (cat, horse, bird, cow, etc.,) breeding and raising is an art and a labor of love.

Another thing, The HSUS is NOT a humane society like our local animal shelters. The HSUS does not rescue animals and rehome them. They are a far left PETA type organization with the main goal of eventually eliminating ALL pet ownership once and for all.

Yes I am well aware of what they do. We are incorporated as a local animal shelter. The abuse and neglect I see in this rural area of Ohio is sinful. Some days I have not much use for my fellow man.

Actually, most of the more recent polls have Coleman, thankfully, pulling away from Al, the idiot.

I don’t know about Ohio, but most every place has laws against animal cruelty, and also statutes for standards of cleanliness, etc, regarding pets, breeding or livestock. So don’t we have laws on the books to address the type of terrible problem you describe, without needing any additional anti-breeding statutes? There are many who are responsible breeders, I only know dog breeders, but I do agree with you it’s despicable when others are not good to the animals and get away with it.

Hi Salvation,

I don’t have a gun, but with all the posts over the past few months I’m thinking I should have one, just in case that “blood running in the streets” thing comes to pass....
