Crist extends voting hours
This is a very big deal: Florida Governor Charlie Crist, to the shock and dismay of Florida Republicans, just moved to extend early voting hours, a move likely to widen the Democrats' lead under a program on which the Obama campaign has intensely focused.
"He just blew Florida for John McCain," one plugged in Florida Republican just told me.
RINO Crist. Why would anyone expect better?
The felon thing I disagree with. Early voting goes on for days. Keeping longer hours is not that big a deal to me.
If FL goes Obama because of this, that means the people of FL wanted to vote Obama. The Dims despite this always claim the GOP tries to suppress votes. We don’t. We shouldn’t. And so this should not be a big deal.
Wait-a-sec. Extending early voting hours should help the GOP. Remember, Republicans are more likely to have jobs. It’s harder to get to the polls during the day for people gainfully employed and if there’s a line, it’s that much harder. By extending the early and late hours, more job holding, taxpaying, wealth creating individuals will be able to vote early. That should mean more GOP votes.
Yes, but my rather dim Gov. has a nice tan and a pretty smile.
Just like the prom queen he is.
That's the logic? Frankly, I wish they'd do the same thing here in Colorado. I want to early vote, but will have trouble making it to the polls when they are open. If they'd keep them open later here it would probably help McCain.
“MCain hater comment !”
I wouldn’t call it hate..
Whatever it is, I feel much more of it for Obama.
But the person who made the “work” comment is right. The polls were only open eight hours a day, presumably working hours. Extention of them from 7:a.m. to 7 P.m. might be good for McCain.
Plus, politico says the opposite. But they are a site for active disiformation.
POLITBURO was started the same week that Obama announced he was running. COINCIDENCE NOT!! Ben Smith is an Obama whore.
ding, ding, ding ... we have a winner.
Twittfan08 ... would you be more comfortable with a poll tax maybe, that'll cut down the vote from folks you probably don't approve of.
Or how about only white male land owners can vote ... does that work for you?
Like libbylu said ... people who are elibible to and want to vote should not be prevented from doing so .. our energy should be spent on insuring that they are, in fact eligible and that they only do it once.
I agree.
I think this may be a wise way to head off any “we wuz robbed” crap if Mac pulls out a close win.
Oh for Pete’s sake. All indiciations are that Obama isn’t even doing as well in early voting as Kerry did four years ago. There have been other FR threads about this very topic.
How many more people will vote early if you extend the hours from 8 to 12, how many of them are Democrats rather than Republicans, and how many of them will vote one way or the other anyway? Please provide real numbers, and further please explain how the demographics in Florida have changed so radically from 2006 or 2004 that this is going to make a dime’s bit of difference in the final results.
Republicans should WELCOME early voting. The bigger the turnout, the better they do in Presidential elections. The more convenient you make voting, the more Republicans will vote. Again, I speak from Texas, where we have had early voting for years and where Democrats go to die in Presidential and statewide elections.
What you say makes sense to me- I just figure the political insiders know better who will be helped and hurt with this move. But you’re right- it’s on us to get out and vote. I still think Crist is just mad at McCain for not picking him as VP though.
Florida has a huge GOTV effort by Republicans! Don’t know where some of you get your info but this is beyond ridiculous the arrows aimed at McCain. Tampa area has six offices and up to date phone banks and you say there is no GOTV.
Will someone tell me if people are standing in line why it is going to hurt Republicans? It is SOP to keep early voting in my state from 7 to 7. Anyone in line gets to vote.
Doom and gloom, sky is falling around here is irritating as are articles from the leftist Politico site.
Extended voting hours doesn’t bother me, but if they start serving free malt liquor I’m gonna really be PO’d.
Ignore the rules, ignore the laws, and even ignore the Constitution, all for some Greater Good, that you might perceive.
This is good for the working folks. We were in line for 3 hours on Sunday.
“Im missing the logic here. How does extending early voting for Floridians give Florida to Obama? I havent really seen any data that shows early voting is helping one party more than the other. What am I missing?”
In a lot of places it is. In NC one million have already voted. 58 percent are registered Dems. 25 percent are registered Republicans. We do not want easier early voting.

Same here! :)
Wonder if this is another leak from a Bush/Romney person to Politico who was originally on the Jeb campaign. I have talked to some GOP types in FL and they don’t see a problem. In fact, this will allow people who work (Republicans) to vote early now.
