My husband called it first. Then, a brilliant, 75-year-old scholar confessed to me over wine: Im sexually attracted to her. I dont care that she knows nothing.
There can be no denying that McCains selection of her over others far more qualified suggests other factors at work. His judgment may have been clouded by ... what?
Science provides clues. A study in Canada, published in New Scientist in 2003, found that pretty women foil mens ability to assess the future. Discounting the future, as the condition is called, means preferring immediate, lesser rewards to greater rewards in the future.
That men are at a disadvantage when attractive women are present is a fact upon which women have banked for centuries. McCain spokesmen have said that he was attracted to Palins maverickness, that she reminded him of himself.
Recognizing oneself in a member of the opposite sex is a powerful invitation to bonding. Narcissus fell in love with his own image reflected in the river, imagining it to be his deceased and beloved sisters. In McCains case, it doesnt hurt that his reflection is spiked with feminine approval.
As my husband observed early on, McCain the mortal couldnt mind having an attractive woman all but singing arias to his greatness. Cameras frequently capture McCain beaming like a gold-starred schoolboy while Palin tells crowds that he is exactly the kind of man I want as commander in chief.
This, notes Draper, seemed to confer not only valor but virility on a 72-year-old politician who only weeks ago barely registered with the party faithful.
And though it isnt over yet, it seems clear that McCain made a tragic, if familiar, error under that sycamore tree. Will he join the pantheon of men who, intoxicated by a womans power, made the wrong call?

WOW!
I was just thinking that the Sycamore tree was the reason National Review hired Kathleen Parker!
What a coincidence!!!!
Hey Kathleen, STFU!!
Well thank god it wasn’t a sexist reason. Wait a minute, this idiot thinks that because she is a woman and McCain is a man, the only motive for selecting her was sexual. I guess with that kind of attitude only ugly women will be allowed to aspire to high office. Wait a minute again, that explains Hilliary, Madelaine, Janet, etc.
Kathleen Parker is now reduced to making shit up.
I am glad that I don’t bother reading her anymore.
I will enjoy it greatly, after the election, when her new BFFs on the Left freeze her out.
The left have to cheapen everything.
They can’t stand the fact that Palin embodies all the values of the Regan Republicans (and thoughtful Democrats). Her looks are incidental. She would rock even if she looked like (heaven forbid) Hillary.
I’ve seen this stupid article posted at least three times in the last week.
Please, no more posts from the booze-soaked, jealousy-impaired, vichy republican, Kathleen Parker.
I have to wonder, why women sit idly by while THEY are kicked to the curb once more. It's as if they can't see the sexism because of the party, or they just sit silently by and nod their heads.
Misogynist dictators worldwide know the scam, and the current media crop is doing it Justice.
The question why does no women say enough, becuase the are the huge losers in this election.
Hags.
The pathetic Parker is being eaten away by envy.
Do the world a favor and stop reading Parker and stop clicking on links to her by-line.
She doesn’t get it and she won’t get it because she’s afraid of the great unwashed middle of flyover country.
None of the Northeast intellectual elites who think they are conservatives are, they are in denial of their RINO habits as well as their own irrelevancy.
Ignore them.
Someone needs to remind Kathleen that Sarah was the first choice of conservatives for v.p. McCain chose her because of the base.
I think the attraction to Sarah Palin (by people of both sexes) may be her zest and joy of life. She is the uber femme!
I marvel at her energy being immersed in a terrible role right now having to look fresh and vibrant while travelling back and forth, taking care of her children, keeping a happy face amidst the monstrous press reviews and ugliness of the interviews.
She represents to me - the epitome of today’s woman - who indeed has it all - and thrives with the role.
There are women all over the nation who are “Sarah Palin” models only she has been fortunate to demonstrate how lovely it is to see a woman breaking down the barriers which keep getting thrown at her.
I love being a woman - and Sarah has given me a little bounce to my walk these days.
Hey Katherine, the Katie Couric tribute on my home page is for you too.
The first sentence of the green-eyed Parkers hit piece states that Parkers husband was attracted to Gov. Palin at first look. Apparently, thats all it took for this woman to decide that Gov. Palin was unqualified to be vice president. Ironically then, its Parker who has ruined her reputation by fixating on Gov. Palins looks- not McCain.
To show you how obssessed she is with youthful looks, you might look at the photographs at Post 2 of this threadthey speak for themselves. This is really Parker’s and Noonan’s problem with Gov. Palin.

I had never heard of Kathleen Parker until she was identified as a “conservative columnist” who had stuck a knife into Sarah Palin. She now seems to be basing a career on that.
Since I had never heard of her before, I have no difficulty in moving her to my ignore list.
That is why the liberals are so afraid
