Renewed Crackdown On Illegal Immigrants (U.S. Plans to Target 140,000 Employers)
WashingtonPost ^ | October 24, 2008 | Staff Writer

The Bush administration in its final weeks will revive a stalled crackdown on U.S. companies that hire illegal immigrants, issuing a new regulation and asking a federal judge to lift a ban on the measure, Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff announced yesterday.

If the court agrees, the government could begin mailing notices to 140,000 employers regarding suspect Social Security numbers used by an estimated 8.7 million workers, pressuring businesses to either resolve discrepancies or fire workers within 90 days.

Bush unveiled the Social Security "no-match" letter initiative in August 2007 after the Senate failed to pass an immigration overhaul measure. However, the program was stayed by U.S. District Judge Charles R. Breyer of San Francisco, who wrote last year that the plan could have "staggering" and "severe" effects on workers and businesses.

The plan had been challenged in a lawsuit filed by the AFL-CIO, the American Civil Liberties Union and a cross-section of industry led by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

Business groups say the administration failed to consider the cost of the plan to small businesses and to justify subjecting employers to possible criminal liability for the first time. Labor leaders and civil libertarians said the plan would lead to discrimination against many legal workers, including native-born Americans, because of errors in the government's Social Security database and in the program's structure.

Lucas Guttentag, director of the ACLU's Immigrants Rights Project, said, "Instead of fixing the database, the Bush administration has turned a blind eye to reality and is intent on punishing American workers in the middle of an economic meltdown."

Still Chertoff said the government was "turning the tide on illegal immigration," citing decreasing border arrests, immigrants' remittances to their home countries and estimates of the number of illegal immigrants in the United States.

Bush screws up beyond the point of repair...again.

If he had announced this during the RNC, and pushed to build the wall...?

Obama would be merely a memory.

Cheers!

Yes, build a wall. But don’t go after every “Joe the plumber” or “Mike the restaurant owner” who hires someone with an hispanic name. Illegal immigration is the fed’s problem, not small business.

“resolve discrepancies”

HA! Find a new SS # that isn’t being used by 20 people.

-The Gov will not tell you if your SS # is being used by someone else btw.

Illegal is illegall.....

But which nation is mad enough to coddle them during a severe economic downturn? They are stealing jobs from Americans though I will admit illegal may be necessary for farm labor

Even socialist Spain is hard on them since their housing bust and hard times

Going after employers is only justified once the border is secure.

Expecting employers to, in effect, enforce immigration law is wrong and just a copout by the Feds.

“we need to secure the borders first. This will just hurt the economy.”

Can’t happen quick enough!!

I closed a 57 year old business rather than hire illegals to stay competative.

I want to see every employer od illegals in jail including homeowners that hire off the street corner!!!

also, stop giving them welfare and other govt goodies.

But don’t make business do the job that govt isn’t willing to do.

that’s like Barney Frank punishing companies for using freddie mac when he was the one responsible for pushing freddie mac.

It is govt’s job to prevent illegals from coming in the first place. They failed and they expect others to pay the price. But do the people in the govt who are responsible go to jail? No!!!

Punishing American workers? This guy needs a pair of handcuffs and a cell for 20 years to think about his treason.

That no match law came out in the early 70s and at the time you had 30 days to clear it up and any error on your reporting form came with a $50 penalty.

Back then everyone complied and illegals weren’t put up with.

In the 60s 70s and 80s businesses in California were raided on a daily basis and the few illegals that did slip through didn’t last long.

I don’t think businesses should be raided unless they steal or commit fraud. But the designation of legal or illegal immigrant is an artificial one, not natural law, and I don’t think people should be punished for something that isn’t truly wrong.
