Alaskan Glaciers Grow for First Time in 250 years Michael Asher (Blog) - October 16, 2008 9:48 AM
A bitterly cold Alaskan summer has had surprising results. For the first time in the area's recorded history, area glaciers have begun to expand, rather than shrink. Summer temperatures, which were some 3 degrees below average, allowed record levels of winter snow to remain much longer, leading to the increase in glacial mass.
"In mid-June, I was surprised to see snow still at sea level in Prince William Sound", said glaciologist Bruce Molnia. "In general, the weather this summer was the worst I have seen in at least 20 years".
"On the Juneau Icefield, there was still 20 feet of new snow on the surface [in] late July. At Bering Glacier, a landslide I am studying [did] not become snow free until early August."
Molnia, who works for the US Geological Survey, said it's been a "long time" since area glaciers have seen a positive mass balance -- an increase in the total amount of ice they contain.

Unsubstantiated. Al Gore hasn’t signed off on this.
This can't be a recent article. Any updates here?
If true, then global warming is much older than the industrial revolution and the increase in carbon dioxide production. (further evidence is the lack of a mile thick glacier where I am right now).
However, I have a hard time believing that this is the first time there's been a bad winter and cool summer which grew the glacier. Especially interesting would have been 1816, also know as The Year Without a Summer.
The glaciers know....The messiah is about to be elected.....and will heal the planet.
That’s because the hotness that is Sarah Palin has left the state.
Al Gore is deeply saddened.
Damned global warming.
Hearing tests for polar bears (Can't hear melting ice! Barf Alert!)

Scientists in California are testing the hearing of polar bears to try to find out whether the noises associated with melting Arctic ice could affect their ability to survive.
In the wild, polar bears live in one of the quietest places on Earth. For much of the time, the Arctic is a bitterly cold, silent world.
But global warming is changing that. Ice, which is crucial to the bears' survival, is disappearing and people are moving in.
"We're expecting industrial activity, shipping, recreation, all of those human activities to increase in the Arctic," says Dr Ann Bowles, a senior research scientist at Hubbs-Seaworld Research Institute in San Diego.
How can it be GLOBAL warming when the warming isn’t global?
...women and minorities hardest hit...
See, as governor Sarah Palin got things done. Think what she can do one seat from the top.
I thought it was because Chuck Norris went up there and gave the glaciers an icy cold stare.
According to UNESCO, the Industrial Revolution had its origins in the Coalbrookdale Ironbridge in Shropshire, England, built in 1799.
What caused the glaciers to melt 250 years ago? Automobiles?
where in the hell is that damn global warming when you need it? Winters here in the peoples democratik republik of michiganstan are brutal...
Who would have thought that the Coalbrookdale Ironbridge would cause Alaska glaciers to melt?
