An elder statesman of the Republican party cast doubt about the legitimacy of the presidential election yesterday - three weeks before Americans go to the polls - by declaring the process was already "tainted" by voter fraud.
The assertion from John Danforth, a former Missouri senator and ambassador to the UN, dramatically escalates charges by the John McCain camp that Barack Obama and the community organisation Acorn are trying to steal the election by bringing new voters into the electoral system.
Danforth said canvassers for Acorn, which has registered 1.3 million new voters - mostly African-Americans, Latinos and young people - had committed widespread fraud in several battleground states.
"This election now has been tainted by something that is just plain wrong," he said. He raised the spectre of the 2000 elections, which was undermined by the hanging chad issue. "We believe that this is a potential nightmare," he said.
"The issue could be whether it is fair at all and whether the losing side believes it has been fairly defeated or it has been cheated."
Danforth's appearance yesterday at a press conference in Washington marked the first time such a prominent figure - Republican or Democrat - has questioned the legitimacy of the November 4 elections because of the dramatic rise in voter participation this year.
It comes as the McCain camp turns increasingly vocal in accusing Obama and Acorn of seeking to steal the elections.
The charges against Acorn have grown more pointed with McCain's slide in the opinion polls. Yesterday Sarah Palin sought to rally the party base with a fundraising email attacking Acorn.
"We can't allow leftist groups like Acorn to steal this election," the email said.
The attacks on Acorn have also become a running thread on rightwing talk radio.

I just noticed it was a British paper that reported this while our OBAMA media ignored. This is looking more like a 3rd World Country’s election all the time but then Obama is from Kenya and helped his cousin get a share of the power after his cousin had the Luo’s riot across the Country killing people.
We are told here if Obama doesn’t win there will be riots in the black community. Inciting a riot should be against the law or it used to be.
Was it Stalin who said that they can vote any way they please as long as we count the votes?
Odinga is a Commie, Obama is a commie, and all of their friends are. You would expect Acorn to be also.

we need to get rid of acorn and we can do it if we get enough pubs in...when we get enough pubs in, we must start being activist and not just let them lolly gag for the next 2 yrs....

Four years ago in OK, I was working for a State House candidate and started through the voting records we had been given by the election board. In my precinct alone I found over 100 names on the rolls of people that didn’t live there or wrong addresses. As time went on and I check other precincts, similar things were happening. Fortunately we caught it early and the election board confirmed with post cards what we had discovered.
The candidate won by 485 votes — would he have won if we didn’t have over 1,000 voters taken off the roles including some who had died? Our vote totals for this House District were down almost 700 votes in a Presidential election year. Sure made me wonder what would have happened if we didn’t scrub the rolls for them.
Don’t worry. Jimmy Carter will be standing by on election day to make sure it’s a fair election.
It is a mess! We send observers to 3rd World Countries and our own election is not honest. Shame on the media, the members of Congress, and the President and his DOJ for doing little to nothing about cleaning up voter fraud over the last 8 years. Bush should have fired all US Attorneys like Clinton did but kumbaya was the name of the day and it is biting us today with crooked elections.
The more ACORN and Obama keeps lying their ass off and it will be more and more difficult to squirm their way out of it.
This is a case where the more they try to cover up the truth of their fraud, the more the cover up is going to bite them in the ass.
The bottom line is that these ghouls have been planning payback for the 2000 election. Here it is. I saw another poster write (paraphrase) “It’s too bad Bush is hated or he could postpone the election.” Bush should postpone the election - he’s hated anyway.
is happened in a little democrat town on North Ga on the border of SC, basically the little old poll worker ladies waited after the end of every statewide election to pull out a box full of "votes" if the count was showing the Democrats lagging. It was finally stopped , but hushed up by the state cuz they were sweet little old white ladies who "didn't mean no harm".
