The New York Times reported that six major movie studios sued RealNetworks, over its new $30 software program that allows people to make digital copies of their DVDs. As the opening warning on every DVD indicates, Hollywood has bitterly opposed such copying. The studios have argued that it threatens their emerging business of digital downloads and can motivate buyers to rent, copy and return DVDs instead of buying them. Paramount Pictures, Twentieth Century Fox, Universal Studios, Warner Brothers, Columbia Pictures, The Walt Disney Company and Sony Corporation are suing RealNetworks in United States District Court in Los Angeles, seeking an injunction that would prevent the company from selling the software.

This is the betamax case all over again.
Remember Disney is the one that lobied and successfully had government extend copyright life to 90 years.
This is to deform copyright into "format right" only.
dvdshrink. didn’t hear it from me.
Gads, I’m reminded of the stupid “Steal this Book,” that came out during the 60s. However, I’m actually becoming somewhat liberal-loon like here... anything that takes $$ from the Hollywood crowd is OK with me. Where do I get that software?
there is a large amount of DVD ripping software.
It abounds, that is why this suit is so confusing.
Disney is a bit late to the party.
As for rent and rip, that is old hat.
Disney needs to realize CONVENIENCE at a LOW PRICE trumps rent and rip.
I think they are just trying to “jam” to obtain a marketing delay. Remember the dual well VHS VCR? Go video was killed off by delay by litigation.
There has been decrypting and copying freeware available for years. Just do a search...
Who would pay $30 anyway, there’s plenty of freeware out there that makes easy work of making perfect copies of DVD’s.
For example, one could use DVDFab to rip and copy a dvd to your hard drive then DVD Shrink can be used to burn to a new disc.
So Disney wants me to buy a new DVD each time my 3 year old scratches one up? No thanks.
If this is the software I think it is the big claim to fame is that it copies the DVD without breaking the encryption. By the way things have getting ruled breaking the encryption is the first step that’s illegal (and most importantly it makes personal backup copies illegal). By not breaking the encryption (ie just doing a bitwise copy) technically this would leave this software legal, unless of course you’re copying stuff you don’t own. So they’re gunning to close that loophole.
My problem with is its from RealNetwork and they suck. The whole concept of them making software that might actually be good is just leaving me confused.
exactly.
that is why this disney suit seems so mentally challenged in its conception.
Making copies for you own use is settled law.
If a person sets up a home server and has a screen in every room which access their legally obtained copy (or copy of that copy) there there is no violation.
I suspect this is some computer illiterate trying to cya after failing to act sooner.
(At least that's what I've heard.)
Disney can’t even stop people from copying movies they haven’t released on DVD yet (Wall-E, for example, has been out there since day 1 of its release in the theatres). What makes them think that going after a legitimate company is going to make the slightest difference?
so did disney close down today because of the bad ecconomy or because they are idiots?
tough call...

Actually this adds a second layer of encryption to the first.....it is after all Real Networks. Why would anyone want to deal with two layers of encryption on their DVD.
So Disney wants me to buy a new DVD each time my 3 year old scratches one up? No thanks.
But how else will you get the updated mandatory previews for other Disney products?
This opens the bidding war as to who will contribute more to which congressional campaign. Screw the people and the facts there’s pork to be had.
Adds more encryption? That sounds more like the RealNetwork I’ve come to know and dispise. Must be somebody else’s software I’m thinking about.
you can’t fix stupid no matter how many imagineers you have.
Might as well let Real Network get sued... If their DVD ripping software is anything like it’s other stuff, you’ll probably end up with spyware and popups on your DVD player while Real commandeers everthing about your DVD player.
