Obama Campaign Stifles Free Speech At University Rally
publiusforum.com ^ | 09/30/08 | Warner Todd Huston

The candidate of change, the shining proponent of a "new way" in national politics, says that you aren't allowed to bring a sign to his rally. So much for the right of free political speech. To add insult to injury, this rally was held at the publicly funded University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, Virginia. So, now the government is lending the weight of its authority to squelch free speech. So, where is the hew and cry about this unAmerican activity? Did the media even note this heavy-handed policy?

But, it is all true nonetheless. The rally was held and weak-spined school officials bent over and meekly accepted the rules derived from the fascistic penchant of the Obama campaign with its anti-first amendment proclivities. Some few small voices questioned this oppression of American rights, but for the most part no one seems to have noticed that Virginians had their Constitutional rights quashed that day. Shockingly, some even thought it was a good idea...

If Mr. Huston is going to publish his work, he needs to proofread it.

Nothing destroys confidence in a published writing faster than grammar, spelling, and usage errors.

(It's "hue and cry".)

I predict that if this gang gets the WhiteHouse, they will be gone within 6 months, and Biden The Bogus will be retired within 12.

If these guys win here comes the fairness doctrine! We will have to be in our basements listening to pirated radio free Conservative Broadcasting. I would laugh at this but it's a real possibility.

Exactly.

I feel like some sort of French Resistance fighter listening to the secret transmissions coming from talk radio while communists organize and maintain the MSM and DNC.

If Obama and his communists win in November, Sean Hannity may be forced to secretly broadcast messages like, "The chair is against the wall."

I agree that Obama is a Socialist/Marxist.

However, no signs were allowed into the McCain rally at the Tampa Convention Center, but then maybe that isn’t public property.

I always find people like you hilarious. You throw the whole thing out because you find a single misspelling? I’d submit to a small minded person such as yourself that you’d never be able to accept ANYTHING printed if that is your lone criteria. Just about every magazine, every newspaper, every book has SOME violation of spelling or grammar.

Now, if every other word was spelled wrong, or the grammar was blatantly bad throughout, I could see your point. Unfortunately, you make yourself look small and petty otherwise.

Now, instead of acting picayune perhaps you’d like to actually ADD something to the conversation for a change?

It may have to be us...our Conservative talkers will probably disappear in the middle of the night! When questioned....hmmmm...they're on vacation.

I'm just telling you about life in the real world.

I work in a business where we receive written material from professionals all day long.

If we receive something that contains obvious grammatical or vocabulary errors, it starts the thought process: "What else has this guy done wrong?" At the very least, the proposal is going to be gone through with a fine tooth comb to uncover the other potential errors. They don't usually come singly. And when competition is strong, that can tip the balance against the writer.

In addition, a writer who presents something for publication with such an obvious error (and it's not a misspelling, by the way, it is apparent ignorance of a commonly used English phrase) is demonstrating that he doesn't care enough about his work to proofread or simply step across the room to consult a dictionary. Not an impression you want to create when you're trying to persuade people.

The internet is a useful tool, but it is full of semi-literate sludge, and the process of winnowing out the sludge from the useful material is both quick and severe. Why put yourself at a disadvantage with something that is easily corrected?

Just a word to the wise.

Thank you -- although I will say that it's one thing just to be chatting along on a place like FR ("hugh" and "series" and "beeber" to the contrary notwithstanding) and another to present what is supposed to be an essay for publication on a blog or website.

Just like we speak in one way when kidding around with our friends, and another when we are making a presentation to a boss or a client . . . or the difference between a personal letter and a formal essay.

That said, I don't think there's any doubt that Obama has a fundamental problem with free speech -- free for him, but not for anyone who disagrees with him.

And that's part and parcel of his authoritarian, hard left, fascist views. You'll never find a hard lefty who will submit gracefully to public criticism (or private for that matter).

With such an artless phrase as “What else has this guy done wrong?” I’d wonder why you think you have any wisdom to impart?

Then again, you said you get work FROM professionals. You didn’t say YOU are the professional. So, since you obviously know your place, I guess I can’t fault you too much.

Now, if you are done worrying about petty minutia, did you have anything sentient to say about the actual topic... aw, never mind. I’d only wonder what else you’d “done wrong” if you’d bother.

You're late, already said my say.

And nice try at snarkiness, but somewhat inadequate. As my dear old dad says, if you can't tell me to pack my toothbrush and go with the sheriff, it doesn't really matter. My Martindale's an AV, if that means anything to you.
