Reader Ron e-mails that the Obama campaign has issued a decree banning all signs at a rally today at the University of Mary Washington in Virginia.
It is a public campus on public property.
The local newspaper, the Fredericksburg Free Lance Star is up in arms:
NOT ALL COUNTRIES guarantee their citizens the right to virtually unbridled freedom of speech. The United States does. Would someone please tell the campaign of Sen. Barack Obama? And the dozing guardians of liberty at the University of Mary Washington?
Mr. Obama, the Democratic nominee for president, is scheduled to speak at a rally at the university today. The public is invited to this forum, on property it, the public, owns. However, signs and banners will not be allowed, according to the organizers and compliant campus officials. Suddenly, UMW is a First Amendment-Free, or at least a First Amendment-Crippled, Zone, subject to the self-serving preferences of politicos. Why does an Obama rally–or a McCain rally or a Nader rally–justify taking a little off the top of Americans’ most fundamental rights?
A UMW spokeswoman says that the Obama campaign required the sign-and-banner ban. That campaign tells us that the ban is for “security” reasons. But a spokesman for the U.S. Secret Service, responsible for protecting presidential candidates, says that the service has no objection to signs at rallies, provided that no “part of the sign could be used as a weapon”–e.g., a heavy metal pole or a sharpened stick. Finally, the McCain campaign tells us, “We encourage people to make signs at our events.”

Obama's campaign is full of Toon retreads. Just like John Kerry's was.

McCain ought to encourage an army of civil rights attorneys to defend anyone who gets charged with fines and jail time — as a civil rights violation. I’ll just bet there’s a whole bunch of attorneys who would come forward, on behalf of Mr. Stateman McCain, to lend a hand here. And in Pennsylvania and in Ohio.
Republicans have some excellent attorneys who are civil rights experts.

I live in Fredericksburg, VA (home of UMW) and I am not surprised that BO would do this. Fredericksburg has a huge military family base for local bases such as MCB Quantico, Ft AP Hill, NSWC Dahlgren and Ft Belvior. There is also a HUGE conservative base out here that goes to church and clings to it’s guns and bibles. I went near the campus today and the place was crawling with Obamanuts.
I think that he is scared of people seeing the truth about his transparency. It is not for any form or protection other than egotistical protection.
I had heard on a local station today (I am in Warrenton and was going to NOVA so not sure what station) that UMW was selling t shirts or something and someone complained about the Univ being used to raise money for the campaign or some other such foolishness. The story was just in the ‘background’ and I didn’t get the whole thing, just picked up the above snippet....Anything about it in the Fredericksburg area???
Everyone should bear in mind that B.O. is a product of the Chicago political mob. If he gets elected, the whole country will become just one big Cook County.
His veneer of civility is disappearing. he will be seen for what he really is.
I live just north in Stafford and from what the Free Lance Star (FLS) printed on its editorial page it seems the T-shirt sales were halted.
The FLS only printed a half page editorial today and left the bottom blank and told people to make their own signs from the blank half page and go to Nobama's rally with the hand made signs and protest.

This is what he does with NO power. That is why I fear this man and his thugs will ban all freedom if elected. We need to get voters out to elect John McCain. Hopefully people who were going to vote 3rd party will wake up and see what an Obama Presidency will mean—you might not have the man you want but you will have the freedom to try next time.

I did read about them. They had the UMW logo on them and then had printed on them “Obama was there, Biden was there, I was there, UWM ‘08”. They stopped selling them because someone pointed out that it looked like the school was endorsing Obama. The money from the sales was supposed to go back to the school.
The bigger story, that needs to go out all over the nation, is the fact that Obama/Biden censored the event by not allowing any signs even though it was a public event held in a public venue.
Strange thing about the event is that during the time that it was supposed to be going, the skies opened up and we had a nice little thunderstorm here. I am not sure if his speach was being delivered indoors or not, but it was sunny both before and after the storm.
Part of the problem was that there were not really enough security check lanes to deal with our truly enormous, unexpected crowd ~ and folks would have simply not gotten to the rally.
I'm surprised folks haven't caught up with this problem.
