Only in Berkeley: Tree Sitters Accused of Racism
NewsBusters ^ | September 25, 2008 | P.J. Gladnick

This is a story that could only happen in Berkeley---militant tree sitters accused of racism. And the funniest part is that the Berkeley Daily Planet reported this story with a completely straight face as if tree sitters are some sort of a legitimate group like Teamsters or Ruthenian-Americans (Tom Selleck is one). It seems that the tree sitters (union or non-union?) have been living up in the Berkeley trees for almost two years protesting the construction of a high-tech gym at the UC Berkeley campus. You can see a video of the "wonderful" life of these tree sitters in the upper right. Meanwhile the Daily Planet reports on the racism charge leveled against the tree sitters:

There is trouble in the forest
And the creatures all have fled
As the maples scream “oppression!”
And the oaks just shake their heads

I will say this, every time we go to US for vacation, we never see crazy people like this, i hope they are in the minority, because they are really dumb...

I will also say, that, living here in Canada i really don’t see stuff like that here, i mean the worst i see are those punk squeeze windshield washers.

Racism? It’s far worse than that. The tree sitters’ actions are just plain kingdomist!

Two excerpts from June 2008...

"At least one tree sitter on Tuesday began throwing bags of human waste on the approaching arborists."

BERKELEY, Calif. (KCBS) -- One woman was arrested Tuesday as authorities removed some of the structures that have housed tree sitting protesters in an oak grove UC Berkeley wants to cut down to make way for a $125 million athletic facility.

The protester was taken into custody after she reportedly bit one of the workers removing her supplies, according to police. Officers cordoned off part of Piedmont Avenue near Memorial Grove and brought in arborists to remove the platforms and gear the tree sitters have used to maintain their perches since December 2006. A university official had earlier said the tree sitters themselves would not be removed yet.

“One of the things we’re most concerned about is safety and security, of our police officers and the people in the trees. That’s the reason we’re not forcibly removing people from the trees today,” said Dan Mogulof, a spokesman for UC Berkeley.

Tuesday was not the first time the university has removed scaffolding built by the protesters, but removing the people has proven more difficult. One witness told KCBS reporter Tim Ryan at the scene that some of the tree sitters threw urine they had collected in buckets at the police and arborists to discourage them from climbing.

Being a liberal is not easy. Sure, you don't necessarily have to have a full-time job, or even a part-time job. But you have to spend every waking hour researching every stupid and important thing to figure out what is the liberal way to be. You have to go to every grocery store, farmer's market, thrift store, 5 and dime, and ask for the manager or proprietor. You have to ask that person how they vote, how they feel about abortion, welfare, womyn's rights, gay rights, wind power, solar power, nuclear power, pornography, possibly even bestiality and pedophilia, &c., u.s.w. and so on and so on, ad nauseam

Then, you take all their answers home, plug their answers into a spreadsheet or database into which you've programmed weightings based on your own level of liberalism and personal PC choices.

You get your scores, but that's not good enough. You log into DU and post something like "I'm thinking of shopping at Cruelty Free Mart because they only sell free range meat and vegetables that died of natural causes."

Liberal ends up paying $20 for a Caesar chicken salad with stringy, possibly diseased meat. On the other hand, a conservative goes to Store A. Store A is trying to rip him off by selling pork butt at $5.00 a pound. Goes to Store B, where it is priced correctly at $1.29 a pound. Conservative pays $20 for enough pulled pork that is perfectly smoked and could feed a small army.

They’re species-ist as well. I mean, what could possibly be more oppressive than sitting on top of someone? Did they ask those trees if they could step all over their rights that way? Think of the symbolism here - the superior, species-ist humans using Vegetable-Americans as chairs and outhouses! I am outraged.

Won-der-ful! how Berkley’s campus finally found its own victim group to go head to head against the treesitters. Doesn’t matter that there’s no actual group to speak of - it’s only the charge that means anything. Why, I’ll bet there’s weeping and gnashing of beaks taking place right now in those arboreal aeries, as some quite ugly birds question every nuance of their dealings with the darker-hued members of their flock.

Accourse, the PTB are a little behind the curve on coming up with this charmer of an offense. What’s it been, 2 years or so? The fine minds of Berkley might not be the brain trust you want to edumacate your little dumpling. Er, I should hope they never were...

“I guess Berkeley is so short of conservatives to level the racism charge at that they now have to resort to hurling this accusation at tree sitters.”

We have officially entered PC Leftist Hell. Are they putting stupid pills in the city water???

But the oaks can't help their feelings
If they like the way they're made.
And they wonder why the maples
Can't be happy in their shade.
