McCain Suspends Campaign to Help With Bailout

John McCain announced that he will suspend his presidential campaign on Thursday to return to Washington to help with bailout negotiations. He urged his opponent Barack Obama to do the same.

The Arizona senator also asked the Presidential Debate Commission to postpone Friday’s scheduled debate with Obama so that he can work on the financial crisis bailout plan now on Capitol Hill.

“America this week faces an historic crisis in our financial system. We must pass legislation to address this crisis. If we do not, credit will dry up, with devastating consequences for our economy. People will no longer be able to buy homes and their life savings will be at stake. Businesses will not have enough money to pay their employees. If we do not act, ever corner of our country will be impacted. We cannot allow this to happen,” McCain said.

Ha ha ha! Harry Reid doesn’t want McCain or Obama to show up. Says we need leadership, not photo ops. What a maroon. I guess since he doesn’t know what leadership is, he thinks no one else does.

I’m surprised Boortz is saying this is a bad move by McCain, good move by Obama to continue with debate. But then, Boortz doesn’t like government intervention at all really.

This is because economically-speaking, this handout plan is profoundly un-conservative. If we're going to start with the handouts (and I would prefer not to), my preference is for Detroit's $50b request. It's a much smaller amount, and it doesn't use taxpayer dollars to rescue billionaires from capital losses incurred by making too many bad bets with too many borrowed dollars.

Bush is addressing the nation on this subject tonight. We will hear from the CIC about what is at stake. Believe him or not at your own peril.

Fact is people are calling Congress to demand they don’t do the bailout.

Are you trying to tell me that people don't like it when some companies go out and gamble and then lose a bunch of money and expect the taxpayers to cover them?

If you'll excuse me, I'm off to Vegas to gamble for a few days. I may lose a lot of money, so make sure and have your wallet open when I get back, I may need you to pay off my debts.

You’re right about the fact that he is free to be bold because no one expected him to win, least of all the hectoring press that has been in the tank. This confounds them as much as it does the Obamessiah, and it is delicious to watch! (But yes, it is very risky.)

McCain was at 47.5 this morning tending up. Obama was at 51.9% trending down.

McCain announced this he is now at 45% trending down to Obama 54% trending up. I would say the reaction to this was not good.

Add to this a Zogby poll floating today saying Americans think Obama is smarter and will beat McCain in a debate. I would say the timing was waaaaayyyy off.

Walking the walk on “Country First”

Hardly. McCain, like most weak and selfish politicians, has hopped right onto the fence regarding this bailout.

"The Maverick" could have taken the lead on this issue and OPPOSED it from the very beginning. But no, he issued the typical noncommittal phrases Americans are too used to hearing.

Hey Maverick, if you or your staff is listening, you need to be opposed to every aspect of this BS BUSH/PAULSON/BERNANKE BAILOUT SCHEME RIGHT NOW - NOT TOMORROW, OR OVER THE WEEKEND, AS YOU GAUGE PUBLIC SENTIMENT - NOW!

I miss you Ronald Reagan.

"That leaves only Palin - who as a state governor really has no say in federal legislation - to continue campaigning.

. oooh...that's a great idea. McCain issues a statement saying that's he's helping to implement the economic fix and that he's confident in the judgment and skills of his vp to participate in a political debate with Obama.

I would LOVE to see that!

WOW...the TV ratings for that event would go through the roof....

I will go out and buy a TV if this is the case....

Recall Princess Dianna's funeral....at the breaks in the service the power went out in several areas...the entire population in UK was either turning on the stove to make a cup of tea or flushing the toilet.

Don’t ya just love these fair weather Republican’s that start pissing their pants and bitching about McCain the first chance they get. Thought I was at DU for a minute.

Ever wondered why Republican/Conservatives in Congress are always pissing their pants?

Just look at the "base" that elects them....they run screaming at every MSM criticism. Then when asked to participate in something constructive to defeat the MSM, they say....no, we can't complain...we must go over the heads of the MSM.

Useless.

And Sarah Palin continues to draw thousands...

Didn't even think about that! In a campaign that has become Palin vs. Obama, he's taking out Obama. Good move!

Partisan politics aside, there is a financial crisis. What happens will affect the country significantly. I am sure that Bush will reinforce that fact tonight. I am also sure that McCain knows exactly what Bush will say. It will probably scare the pants off of the nation.

I can recall Schumer's and Dodd's reaction when Paulson, et. al. met with the congressional leaders. From the NYT ...

Weren't there any Republicans at that meeting?? What did they have to say?? All we have is Democratic spin.

New strategy in DC:

Drop the word Bailout (turns off the public).

Start calling it a Rescue Plan.

"I think McCain’s timing was a little off. The time to make this announcement was 5:55pm ET, not 2:55pm ET."

Call me gullible but I don't think McCain gives a rat's rear end about how this plays out politically. While he is wrong on certain issues, I have never doubted that he believes what he is doing is best for the country that he serves. This is "Country First" as action and not a slogan.

The left would make that look like McCain was hiding behind Sarah’s skirts.

The debate location is Oxford, Mississippi and the small town of only 10,000 people is in an uproar because they’ve spent millions of dollars preparing for the debate. Hundreds of reporters are all set to cover it onsite with communications trailers, satellite uplinks, etc. The networks have rearranged their TV schedules around the debate and sold advertising time based on it.

Canceling the debate is a BIG DEAL.

I wonder if they could swap debate nights, though. Have the VP Debate Friday night and the first POTUS debate next week when the VP debate was scheduled ? I wonder who is more prepared, Biden or Sarah, for a sudden call to debate ?

Historical gaffes aside, Biden basically illustrated how a leader should act in these situations. The problem is, his guy wants to issue joint statements and then debate FOREIGN POLICY.
