John McCain announced that he will suspend his presidential campaign on Thursday to return to Washington to help with bailout negotiations. He urged his opponent Barack Obama to do the same.

The Arizona senator also asked the Presidential Debate Commission to postpone Friday’s scheduled debate with Obama so that he can work on the financial crisis bailout plan now on Capitol Hill.

“America this week faces an historic crisis in our financial system. We must pass legislation to address this crisis. If we do not, credit will dry up, with devastating consequences for our economy. People will no longer be able to buy homes and their life savings will be at stake. Businesses will not have enough money to pay their employees. If we do not act, ever corner of our country will be impacted. We cannot allow this to happen,” McCain said.

Obama is in deep debate prep. Even he goes back to DC it will be stylin and profiling.

"This seems to be a little too overly-dramatic on McCain’s part. Go back to Washington, fine...but no need to suspend the debate."

I agree, this moves looks totally desperate. Reminds me of Rudy in the aftermath of 911 wanting to postpone the handover to Bloomberg.

Great idea, what he is able to accomplish will contrast to Obama, plus it will pull Biden back to washington as well.

More time for Palin to woo the people.

I really like the way McCain thinks and fights.

Obama should debate Biden. They can talk about coal, gun control, the vote on the Iraq war, inappropriate political ads, etc.

Brilliant idea! Needs to be made into a campaign commercial asap.

"That leaves Palin vs Biden on the campaign trail."

Biden needs to go back too since he's a sitting Senator.

Soon Obama will jump in and say ME TOO, ME TOO! I’m glad Senator McCain is taking my lead and going back to Washington.

“He’ll vote present” My first thoughts too. McCaine should have invited Obama to come back to Washington and then say, oh wait, never mind.

This smacks of a desperation move at this late stage.

“Obama will debate by himself...” thereby improving his chances for victory.

McCain is smart now.

Obama is in a box.

Blamed if he doesn’t go back to Congress as a “care-nothing about real Americans”

Blamed if he does go back to Congress because he would be following “McCain’s lead.

I think it is marvelous and right on!

I just heard this and I must admit I got goosebumps.

What an honorable man!

I know that many of you are against any kind of bail out or rescue or whatever you want to call it. I'm not an alarmist but my husband is a broker and congress has to do something or else the market will fail. This is bad people, we are up against a wall.

No, it looks like a move that will resonate, just like shortening the GOP convention due to the hurricane.

If this news report is true, I hope McCain indeed makes good on returning to the Senate to work on the financial crisis . Will the empty suit follow suit? Hmmm...................... time will tell, eh??

Obama: Financial crisis a major threat to economy
MSNBC/MSPDS
Chicago 9/15/08

CHICAGO - U.S. Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama said on Monday the crisis sweeping Lehman Brothers and other Wall Street firms posed a major threat to the U.S. economy...(snip)

OK Obama, is it MAJOR enough to actually DO something about it?

CBS has a 40 second teaser clip of Sarah’s interview with the perky one. Sarah, is response to a “is this economy heading for a great depression” question from Couric said that this crisis is serious, could very badly affect the economy and that action is needed; NOT necessarily what is being proposed, but must be bipartisan.

This is the gist of the Republican dilemma; how to satisfy the demand for action from the Bush WH and the markets with the protests of conservatives for no bailout. His first big post-Palin decision is one on the economy.
