John McCain announced that he will suspend his presidential campaign on Thursday to return to Washington to help with bailout negotiations. He urged his opponent Barack Obama to do the same.

The Arizona senator also asked the Presidential Debate Commission to postpone Friday’s scheduled debate with Obama so that he can work on the financial crisis bailout plan now on Capitol Hill.

“America this week faces an historic crisis in our financial system. We must pass legislation to address this crisis. If we do not, credit will dry up, with devastating consequences for our economy. People will no longer be able to buy homes and their life savings will be at stake. Businesses will not have enough money to pay their employees. If we do not act, ever corner of our country will be impacted. We cannot allow this to happen,” McCain said.

The truth is Obama’s presence is meaningless in this crisis. He is a non-entity in the Senate. Whereas McCain is a mover.

I’m not being hysterical, but maybe McCain is. It’s going to look wimpy to most people. He tried to cancel the debate.

He has responsibilities as vice-chair of the Commerce committee and to his constituents.

Abraham Lincoln, FDR, George W Bush, during some of the toughest times this nation has faced, all found the time to run their respective wars and still debate their opponents.

As I said, if McCain can somehow find the time to speak at the Clintons' shindig (which is tonight, not tomorrow as I had initially thought), if John McCain has time for Bill Clinton, he's got time to debate in front the American people.

AWESOME! Love that picture.

I see the trolls are out from the Dems on this thread. Anyone saying McCain is afraid to debate ZERO on foreign policy is no McCain person.

It was a brilliant political tactic to claim that the suspension wasn't political.

And it probably wasn't. What the Democrats don't seem to understand, is that Good Statesmanship is a devestatingly effective political tool, precisely because it raises the practitioner above mere politics into a Leadership role.

Modern politics is all about narcissists trying to seem statesmanlike long enough to fool a majority of people into voting for them. The ploy doesn't work when the chips are really down, though.

Well, the chips really are down, and Obama the narcissist is still down at the bar, trying to convince some drunk slut to go back to his place.

Hannity just said 82% agree with Mac’s decison to suspend campaigning and go to DC.

LOL, you need to get a dictionary. What McCain did was anything but reactionary. He is the one who ACTED. It is Obama who is REACTING.

Deflation = Great Depression II

It needs to be repeated. Not to scare people, but to let them know just how serious this crisis is.

The real estate collpase is taking trillions of dollars out of our economy. We can't really borrow any more. Printing hundreds of billions creates other serious problems.

I hope the adults in Washington are able to figure this out. A debate should be the least of their worries right now.

"till, my point stands "

Maybe in your mind, but not mine or most folks here on FR.

Look, Harry Reid called McCain today and told him not to come back to D.C., that he wouldn't be of any help. Now, you tell me, would you stay or would you go, especially in light of the fact that top Democrats were saying just yesterday, that McCain needed to vote on this issue?

Obama says “If they need me I’ll go to Washington”

527 groups should play this and ask BO if he is gonna give back his salary for the days he doesn's show up for work. Then show the unemployment trends -- and people in unemployment lines.

BO: the gift that keeps on giving.

McCain has said the country comes before his campaign many times.

I guess he thinks it's better for the country if Obama wins.

Obama - n Fox News Cable said he's going to be at the debate...since president's should have the abitlity to multi-task!!!

One problem!! HE'S NOT THE PRESIDENT!! He's a senator & getting paid to do his job. He can fancy himself as president all he wants to.

The election is not tomorrow or next week. Obama has been campaigning for 19 months & if the people don't know what he stands for by now, then his campaign is a lost cause!!

I love him and listen to him everyday in the car.

Sean loves himself too.

Too bad he uses 27 pronouns referring to two people. No one knows what the hell he's talking about half the time unless you have the "Hannity speak" interpretation device turned on.

Risky move by McCain, but he made the move.

Obambi still wants to debate. Perhaps Sarah Palin should challenge him. :)

I agree, but the obvious problem as I see it right now is the MSM and how they might spin it all. The MSM has no shame, no integrity, and no line they will not cross/or wont.

The bias of the media is no longer a problem. McCain/Palin have made the bias SO obvious that it actually works to their favor.

Classic warfare tactic - take your opponents advantage and turn it against them. (see Obama, celebrity)
