Census: State not luring many newcomers
By John Flesher Associated Press writer
Kevin Breen gets the occasional you-gotta-be-kidding stare when telling people he moved from the Boston area to southeastern Michigan - voluntarily.
"They ask if I had to, and I say no, it was a choice," the 41-year-old said Monday. "We could have gone elsewhere."
Breen arrived in July, becoming a school administrator in Grosse Pointe Woods near Detroit. He took up residence in neighboring Grosse Pointe Park with his wife and two children, ages 9 and 6.
Attracting productive, well-educated families like the Breens from other states is crucial for breathing new life into Michigan's sagging economy. But a U.S. Census Bureau report being released today suggests it remains an uphill climb.
The data shows that 80.9 percent of the people living in Michigan last year were born there. Only Louisiana (82.2 percent) and New York (82.1 percent) had higher shares of native-born residents.

Michigan Ping
Michiganders should keep in mind that I am referring to certain counties in the eastern part of the state.
The democrat party works its predictable magic.
The corrupt liberals have made Detroit uninhabitable for human life (and to some degree all of Michigan).
This guy came to be on the Government Dole, not in the private sector.
We’d like to move back but a job recruiter told us not to even consider looking for a job in Michigan for another two years.
And there are people here who suggest we should let the Democrats win to teach the GOP and the rest of the country a lesson. Let Michigan show you why that's a bad idea, especially given that no one seems to actually learn anything from these "lessons".
no.
anecdotal—my next door neighbor and his wife just moved here to retire from michigan.
People are moving all the time to better places, at better prices. I realized many years ago that I had given up quality of life for location. Thank God, we were able to correct that.
Well of course he came. Not like he's a manufacturing worker. He's sucking off the taxpayer's teat.
And that’s supposed to be a bad thing. Just damn.
In Southern California it’s what we pray for.
Grosse Pointe used to be a pretty nice place to live. I imagine it still has plenty to offer, even if things have gone way down hill in Detroit. And no doubt you can buy a very nice house for less than you might pay elsewhere.
With people like Michael Moore hailing from the state people aren’t flocking to Michigan???? I thought they would want to see the Memorial...You know the half eaten bucket of KFC that Mikey Left and the “Duece” in the Port a Potty...
It can’t be repeated too many times, maybe someone will listen. Every place the dRATs touch turns to s*&t. Not one exception. And we still have them all over the fricking place.
Michael Moore is now EMPLOYED by the State of Michigan.

HEAR,HEAR! Bears repeating constantly.
No axe to grind here at all, however:
We made the “final” move here to Battle Creek to be near our son and favorite daughter-in-law for our final days. (Moved from Coronado — with a five year interim stop in Bullhead City, AZ).
I was familiar with Michigan from my youth — and, in all candor, it is marvelous to be back home. Battle Creek is far removed from the rust belt syndrome prolific in the Toledo-Detroit-Flint corridor; and the area is vibrant with small businesses, lovely lakes, clean air and great soil. Business is good!
The homes are well maintained; service industry polite and helpful; incredible seasonal changes and superb outdoor activites. A lot of bang for my dollar and a superb National Cemetery.
What more can I ask for ?
Oh yes, I might add that the freezer is full of bluegills and bass — all caught within twenty minutes of the house on a crystal clear lake. No fee to launch the boat — and a clean restroom, to boot. Just have to be careful not to hit a deer on the country roads, hereabout. *S*
Btw, I am really talking about Michigan — where a cup of coffee at the local gas station is quarter — not 99 cents.
wow!
i’d love to live in coronado.
I grew up in the Detroit area.. I love the lakes in Michigan. It’s beautiful country with wonderful springs, summers and fall color..
that said, I never found decent work until I moved the heck out of there.. I have prospered in Los Angeles.
Everyone I know is out of work in Detroit, except my 2 sisters, who predictably are both teachers. I was thinking about moving back to the area, but due the lack of work, it won’t happen.
Equally surprising - the Pope is a CATHOLIC!
