WASHINGTON - House Democrats will allow a quarter-century ban on drilling for oil off the Atlantic and Pacific coasts to expire next week.

Appropriations Committee Chairman David Obey is telling reporters that language continuing the moratorium will be omitted this year from a spending bill to keep the government in operating funds after Congress recesses for the election.

Congress should have done this sometime in the last 10 years.

About f’n time. They must have realized that their non-drilling bill was too well publicized and it would have been political dynamite to use that as a condition for shutting down the government. Of course, nothing has been done about the environmental lawsuit wing of the Dem Party, so all’s not lost for those traitors.

They probably figure that there will be so many lawsuits filed by enviro-whackos that no drilling will occur anyway.

I'll wait out the 7 days.

Was this like some huge decision that they had to think about?

Okay, they let this expire. That lets Obama off the hook. Nice Plan A...

But these are Dems so beware of Plan B.

We need the CONGRESS along with McCain.

Don’t they companies have to ask for and be granted leases next? Dems don’t have to lease anything out. THEY are in charge of the Econo-Energy Crisis.

Democrats to let offshore drilling ban expire

I'll believe it when I see it it - the radical Lefties (and their enablers, including one or more US Presidents) have been renewing the ban, year after year, for decades.

Know what? Just the royalties from oil & gas production from ANWR and the Pacific OCS could just about pay for the proposed bank bailout (and that's just the royalties, no taxes or bonus bids included). But the Dems (& RINOs) would rather tax us, than produce our own publically-owned oil & gas...

It is not that simple. They will let it expire so it takes the heat off them for the election.

However, I read somewhere else that the Dems plan to add it back after the election. It takes 2 years to go through the approval process, so the Dems have no fear of an oil rig showing up along the coast.

House Democrats will allow...

Right, they will.

That putrid slime of a "bill" that they passed in the House was dead on arrival in the Senate and they knew it.

They've outed themselves yet again, as the party of small ideas and treason by concocting this thing in the first place.

It's just galling to know that they actually thought that no one would notice the sham they were attempting to inflict on us.

I've run out of expletives to condemn them.

Are you sure there are poison pills in the bill? On its face, it looks like a capitulation.

Of course, I don’t trust the dims one bit and find it hard to believe they would simply allow off shore drilling restrictions to lapse. If true, it’s because they are scared sh__less of this issue come November.

Lifting the drilling ban gives considerable momentum to the underlying bill, which includes the Pentagon budget, $24 million in aid for flood and hurricane victims and $25 billion in loans for Detroit automakers in addition to keeping the government open past the Oct. 1 start of the 2009 budget year.

Democrats continue to spend our money like there's no tomorrow!

Bullcrap. They just couldn't get another bill passed and Bush promised a veto but the author either didn't know his job or is suppressing it to make the Dems look better.
